I started playing drums in 6th grade ('87) when I got to HS I was in the marching, concert, and Jazz bands. I played all percussion instruments. I picked up bass at 24 for 2 years, stopped playing music all together for 7 years and picket it back up 9 months ago.

I've always wanted to learn how to play blues harmonica aswell but it just seems so complicated.

@BassZach:

It's not as complicated as it sounds once you get the basics down. You managed to learn bass didn't you? Like all instruments, with proper technique and a bit of woodshedding, you'll get good in no time. But to reach the level of a virtuoso like Little Walter ,among others, will take a long time.

Look up lessons in your area, a face to face teacher is always a good move. I find a lot of the youtube vids are great once you get the basics down ( bending etc) but aren't that helpful for raw beginners.

Cheers.

Yeah I just want to be able to play it like Neil Young and Bob Dylan because I play bass and guitar in a folk/acoustic trio and adding some harmonic would definetly spice it up a bit

Well if that is the kind of harmonica you want to play, you haven't got far to go! It'll take a bit of practice using a Rack and playing bass and harp at the same time. All the best!

He's right. All that folk stuff is 1st position and very simple. I picked that up confidently in a few months. I've been playing harp for quite a few years now and play at New Zealand's annual jazz fest and always get good reviews and that. Blues is a whole different ball game but it's just about sitting down and learning where your roots are for the chord changes. From there you just wing it. Trust me :) Unless you plan on being the next Sonny Boy Williamson. Then you should take it as seriously as a sax :p

I am proud to say my first instrument was electric bass. Then as I got deeper into Jazz I went to doubling on electric and double bass. Next I got really into composition, so I started taking piano lessons, both Jazz and Classical schools.

Now I am a Film Scoring major at Berklee, but my principle instrument is electric, although I maybe switching it to acoustic soon. I compose exclusively on piano, and perform exclusively as a bass player on both electric and acoustic.

I love it all!

Guitar, dobro/lap steel, mandolin, keys, djembe. Man, when I was working on my MA in Ethnomusicology I played about two dozen instruments with a fair degree of competency... some of the instruments in the Javanese and Balinese gamelan orchestras I was REALLY good at. I've slacked off since those days!

o yea i totally forgot, i've been doing gamelan this year at college. i've moved up to bonang, gender is still kind of beyond me...
