I know that this thread has reached "dead fish" status by now but nowhere have I seen anyone ask or try and reason why Mr. Tuneh stands to play the way he does.
How tall is he? He reminds me of Danny de Vito, short and chubby.
How big is his bass? Against him it looks enormous. OK, it leans back a lot and has the end pin out a mile, yet he is bending forward so far from the waist with his bottom sticking out. Is this the only way that he can (a) support the bass and (b) reach the high notes given his (and the bass') size and shape? The price that he will probably ultimately pay for such posturing is neck, back and shoulder problems through reaching way back behind his head for lower notes with such a high left elbow.
Yes, I feel that the amount of gesturing and posturing, no matter how heart-felt they are, would be a major distraction for most audiences as well as musicians. There are lots of things that bother me about his playing, enough to seriously question the meaning and use of the word "virtuoso".
Comparisons are odious but compare the straight forward no-nonsense approach of Alberto Bocini playing Bottesini's Carnevale de Venezio variations on Youtube.
