Double Bass Does thrashing around while you play do any good?

I've been watching this thread to see if anything helpful or educational would come out of it. No such luck. I've held my tongue as long as I can. 159 posts of bashing another bass player. A working pro. Sad. Really sad. Not a proud moment. I thought the DB side was supposed to be more mature.
It hasn't been 159 posts bashing Tuneh. You know that. There was plenty of support of his gestures in the first half of the thread. Problem was, a repeated argument was that if you can't play as well as Tuneh, your comment is invalid. Doesn't that apply equally to his supporters? Anyway, it's the kind of goading comment that propels a thread.
This is not the kind of subject that's going to provide help or education. But, along came Kurt Muroki, who, I submit can outplay anyone here. Post 135 sums it up. I'm sure any ergonomist would agree with him, and from the perspective of my profession, I agree with him.
Different styles among the three, but I submit that Bill Charlap and Kenny Barron show by example that Keith Jarret's use of his body doesn't help him at all. It's certainly wrecking his health. Same thing with playing bass. In my humble opinion, of course.
May there be peace in the valley.

Does thrashing around do you any good? No.

Does using multiple screen names on various websites to praise your self do your self-esteem any good? Evidently.

Oh wait I forgot, he's a DOUBLE BASS VIRTUOSO nevermind...

Wow. This is really not normal. The only comment or upload on all of these profiles that isn't praising 'Tuneh' is one by americanbassist criticising edicson ruiz's video of the 'Elephant' and suggesting watching one by Guy Tuneh. . .

It's a real shame as I personally have a lot of respect for GT as a bassist. He has obviously put a huge amount of effort into his playing. He must have dedicated his life to the double bass and I admire him as a musician.
However I really can't understand why he would bother doing this when his playing is so good.

Back to the OP I like the bass playing but find his movement distracting. Moving about is fine, but Its all about context. The first example it detracts from the overall performance. However I his video of The Elephant works really well and is a lot of fun to watch. I bet the audience loved it.

I know you guys would rather continue your arguments BUT.... maybe the bassist Tuneh has a neurological condition, kinda like hyperactivity disorder where he needs to be constantly moving - maybe the way he experiences music is in his body and he has to move, literally.

Prior to internet anonymity, professional orchestral players and academics were careful to speak in hushed tones when discrediting established players. The classical world is hugely political, and that guy sitting next to you for the next 20 years might actually like Eugene Levinson's "Per Questa." There are those who don't like Edgar Meyer. Personal preference does *nothing* to take due credit away from one who has devoted their life, rather successfully, to this trade. Personal taste is exactly that- PERSONAL.

Let's please return to a level of reasonable civility. Tenure has been dismissed for far less than what has been posted here. Our teachers would likely throw a tin of Pops at us for the nasty things that have been said in this discourse, based exclusively on petty youtube videos. It's just youtube. What, are we 12?

Slow it down, People!

Those pretty serious allegations.

Nobody proofed that, never than less Do You really think that a Bass Virtuoso as Guy Tuneh need such a tacky PR "help".

Actually it's quite worth observing, what's running here over the last couple of days/pages, 'cuse actually, I'll not be surprised if one of you is standing behind those Youtube user names, which apparently/quite obviously familiar with a very sick internet user trying to "intercept " other people during dealing with his own personal problems, regrettably, in that case against one of the most remarkable bassists of our time.

It's quite obviously looking like a typical nasty scumbag internet trick using the motto of enjoying to BE and to STAY anonymously under self built dugout!

Now to those of You using this example in order to "ride along together that party", there two more important arguments to mantion, first: I don't think that 2, 3, 4 or even 5 fake internet users could define or validated someones playing, in contrary, there are much more than that few number to like what Guy Tuneh presenting by his Videos in Youtube and frankly, his world-wide reputation/carrier comes from his ability to playing string-bass and not because of few comments "praising" him.
Second: those who choosing low commenting by presenting themselfs as some one who cannot exchange respectively any issues as human being except no other way than get-way-from-theme maneuver (instead offering logical skilled relevant proposal to that debate…) using suppressing the others, well guys, in case You didn't realised, eventually its You who show us that there is much bigger problem with You, let me to put it the other way round - your problems are coming out much strongly that way.

Personally, I Can't imagine of Guy Tuneh doing such an odd thing, especially when haveing such an international reputation.

However If I may, a small critic towards Guy David Tuneh, I can't understand why he doesn't check carefully his internet "fans" just by testing their user-channel before approving their comments.

Best

Martin.

For what it's worth, I'm not personally huge fan of Mr. Tuneh's playing BUT I am a huge fan of respect and civility towards those with seniority and credentials. Students and amateurs here posting scathing remarks about any established professionals should beware- that crap doesn't fly in the working world. To professionals who would criticize Mr Tuneh, please post your own superior performances! Not in the name of ego, but for furthering our art. :)

It is natural to look at a player and think "I could do better than that..." That impulse drives the continued excellence of our instrument. To feel that impulse and simply lash out, rather than taking that drive into the shed is a fool's pastime. All that being said, I'm going to go practice.

I can't write a symphony, does that mean I cannot criticize one?

On the other side, here's a quote from the legendary Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark, when the reporter asked him why he diddn't win: Well, have a go yourself then!
