Double Bass Does thrashing around while you play do any good?

@ Paulcannon, actually I do believe that he would be the one to say No to any kind of Orchestra.

More than that I do believe that Tuneh doesn't need any defend and as someone already mentioned here, some of You guys are just commenting very low, taking it as if You feel attacked personally, a bit of honesty/justice wouldn't kill no one.

So, please let us stay factual!

Have a nice day.

R.

Actually, on second thought, I've had a request to reopen this topic, and it seems a reasonable one. The respect rule of the forum does not prevent members from critiquing the contents of a youtube video. *If* Mr. Tuneh himself were a participant in this thread, that would complicate matters. But since he either isn't participating or chooses to post anonymously, then this isn't an issue at this point. Please continue the discussion if it moves you, and be aware of the respect rule for each other.

1st. If Tuneh didnt find himself in an orchestra its his own matter, i will not be surprised if form his side he would not play in any orchestra and i will not be surprised if no orchestra will take him. (ist not noly about good playing or not- This is not the matter, ist also about the way of thinking, individuality etc., i guess that not everybody is made to do the same job for life, some may need freedom, nothing wrong about it.

2nd. As much as someone tries to defend him, there are many others who try to put him down and to present him as a strange poor person, sorry guys that not fair!

3rd. Last but not least: Mr. Tuneh is one of the best own something very very special, very unique, unmistakable. Fact is he already changed the face of bass Performing.

I will continue to follow his work and enjoying his way of playing, after all the guy is playing the bass with all his budy and soul.
I wish that everyone out there would do the same, everyone in his field.

Surely I’ll go to catch Masterclass with him, for me ist a must to meet and to him experience live, not only as a great bass performer, also as a person.

Best

Dave.

Dave.

Dave, (which, of course, isn't your real name) I would ask you in which way has he accomplished this amazing and historical musical event?

BTW, I for one, am happy to see this thread reopened (yes, I was at least one person involved in requesting that it be reopened) and i'll kindly tell you why....
If you spend much time here @ TBDB you'll notice it gets pretty vanilla and boring much of the time with the incessant threads about what kind of car do you drive to haul your bass around in and what's the cheapest DB on the market, etc. I'm familiar with the OP, both as a person and as a great bassist, whom I respect very much. When I see a thread by one of the players in the community that I feel has value, usually, i'm in....both because of the possibility that I may give out some decent information and, as some of you know, I enjoy just goofing around and hopefully not insulting anyone beyond repair.
A couple of things are going on in this thread that I find really interesting. Paul (Cannon), IMO, has nailed at least one or at least is close. IMO, there are two posters involved who are European or/and are masquerading as such, in kind of an internet game. Again, for whatever reason, I find it interesting.
As far as the playing goes, I couldn't begin to play that music on that level. I could if it were jazz, because that's what I do. If I close my eyes and listen, he sounds pretty good, although there are places in some of the clips where he checks his intonation (subtly?) by pizzing an open string with his left fingers. In any performance, in any genre, IMO, that's a no-no and shows a degree of insecurity in the intonation.
If I re-listen and open my eyes to watch, as I mentioned before, I become really uncomfortable watching a player who seems to almost demand that it's "all about him".
Last time I checked, this isn't what any kind of music is about.

I just finished reading the whole thread before watching the video, and now, after watching it, GT's movement really seems tame to me compared to many of the responses posted here and what I was expecting from them. Paul, you might have mentioned C Haden earlier, and I am reminded of him here as far as the "dancing with the bass" routine. I really don't have a problem with it. I think if we were to see the whole group from more of a distance, Tuneh's movement wouldn't seem all that outrageous. As it is, the videographer chose to focus on him, but the other players are moving expressively, too, as many musicians do when they play. I would probably give him 50% on the hot dog meter.

There two more things I'd like to mention:

Once again I'm not Guy Tuneh (there are some things that i would like to be like him - but still I have nothing to do with him)

What the **** is going here? so he moves, so what ?
What about the T-Shirt the he wears in the Elefant Video, isn't it bothers no one?
lets begin a thread about it also....

As some of U mentioned moving is not so rare, so why make such a big deal about GT moving here or there...?

Fact is: Tuneh is outstanding by all means & we have to learn to deal with that. its not easy to know that some one like him just out there doing his "thing", we are all bassists try to make music, and than from the other side this GT remaind us of all what we could or couldn't be… (or Do)

Radu.
(& that my real name!)

@ Steve and some others: Ye right!
Tuneh is a impostor, sick guy, controlling/manipulating people worldwide to help him with PR, he is a cat-eating-Zombie-Monster works undercover using my name to take a part at that forum…
What's up Folks, aren't you going to far?

If I would be GT, after what happanes here I would take part to try to make some illusionary people come down.

For all of You who just cannot stop,
a nice nugget :

Tuneh & shehata leading the Bass-section of the West-eastern Divan Orchestra under Barenboim.

You can see Tuneh (00:20 − 00:38)
among many other stars (Braunstein & Co.) sitting near Mr. Shehata 1st. Stand right behind the Cellos near the most left flute player (on the left side of the Video), and guess what, they all move, toghter, every single one in that Orchestra is moving with the Music and with Barenboim.

If Barenboim will not appreciate Tuneh and his ability, there is no chance on earth that Tuneh would share the first stand with the Ex-principal of the Berlin Phil. playing with that Orchestra and under his conducting on those stages.

I've been watching this thread to see if anything helpful or educational would come out of it. No such luck. I've held my tongue as long as I can. 159 posts of bashing another bass player. A working pro. Sad. Really sad. Not a proud moment. I thought the DB side was supposed to be more mature.
