Does your bass collection have a theme?

My theme is "Bruised and Scared" neglected basses. I like finding basses that others left for dead in pawnshops. Most of the basses I find just need a little work to get them back in good working condition. The thing is the one's I do buy are so cheap that it'd be a crime NOT to take them home. ;)

I prefer wood grain over painted.

I have two that are Walnut and maple and 1 that is swamp ash.

My Fenderish ones are all painted, but I would sell them in a moment for a walnut jazz and walnut and an ash p.

I have a Iby 5 that is CA red, I like it but I also have an ash one on order that might take it's place

I guess if there's a theme for mine, it would be SYMMETRY

  • 3 4-strings / 3 5-strings
  • 3 neck thru / 3 bolt on
  • 2 light wood finishes / 2 dark wood finishes / 2 burst finishes
  • 3 ebony boards / 3 maple boards
  • 3 with pickguards / 3 without pickguards
  • 3 with brass nuts / 3 without
  • 3 with adjustable nuts / 3 without

All have soapbar pickups....guess that's a theme.

And then there's this....
my theme is awesomeness.

My theme only applies to the stuff on the stands. The gear on the chairs belongs to my kids.

Gotta be used as I love the hunt, gotta be a great price, must be able to hold, play, hear before purchase and prove to me it possesses the will and attitude to be a working instrument, must have a label pedigree with a great bassist attached to it. Alas my worst criteria, I can't have more than 3 as each must have at least 6 hours a week "doing time" - there is no place in the fleet for a hanger queen.
-Alembic 93 JPJ Triple Omega (Mutant Maple)
-Fender 99 Jbass (usa) (Sunburst)
-Ric 11 4003 (Midnight Blue)

I like what I like and I like variations of it:

Elrick Classic 5 JJ
Elrick Classic 5 MM/J
Basslab Soul V JJ passive
Michel Fournel 5 with soapbars
Lakland 5576 with Nordy pup in the sweet spot

All are 35" scale 5 strings and all are well under 9 lbs.

Looking for another Lakland 5er. 6 is the highest # of basses I'll allow myself.

The theme to my collection is to have all the standards. I know that might be a bit subjective, but this is how I see it. I have MIA Fender P, MIA Fender J, Hofner Viola Bass, and a RIC 4003. To wrap it up, I'm thinking I'll have to add a Gibson Thunderbird and a Musicman Stingray. Does that complete the theme? :) And do you have a theme to your collection?

I started out with a "hit all the classics" theme, but found out that Rics and beatle basses just aren't for me, so I flipped mine... I *thought* it would be the same with T-birds, and got a really clean one in a killer deal, but am definitely keeping it...

Regarding Stingrays - been there, too - and found that Sterlings are more suitable *for me*...

That said, I'm both a working musician and a bargain hawk - so, my modest collection has a good part of the classics - coupla P Basses, coupla Jazzes, a T-bird, and a few EBMMs... but also reflects both a "best tool for the job", and a "ot a great score, so I grabbed it" attitude...

Lastly - since I frequently play 5ers, there's a few of them in there, also...

- georgestrings

I swing between "have lots of different basses to cover all the bases" and "loyal to one kind of bass, but have one with rounds, one with flats". It's time consuming and wasteful. :)

Truth be told, every gig I have ever played could be covered beautifully by a P Bass.

My "theme" at the moment I guess is Fender (or Fender inspired). The Burst & Fiesta P's are wearing flats, the Brown P & White Jazz are wearing rounds, and the Jaguar is wearing Half-Rounds....different tones all across the board.

This is not all that I have Though, I have a couple Jacksons & a Tobias Growler under the bed, and a Ovation AEB in the closet.

Overall my collection doesn't really bare a "theme", they are all good for something.

Not a theme as such but all my basses have a couple things in common...
They are all passive,
They are all very simple in terms of onboard tone shaping tools( either none at all or P bass layout).
All have one pickup.
My main basses have alder bodies and brazilian rosewood fingerboards on maple necks.
None have any fretboard markers.
All pickups come from the same manufacturer.

Interesting question. Yes. My themes are: 1) modern style, and 2) white or black color.

Every one of my bass guitars is either black or white in color. Each one could be classified as "modern" in form and/or function - definitely not "traditional".

Each instrument has an ebony fretboard or fingerboard. Each fretted bass has either abalone or mother of pearl blocks on the fretboard. Each fretless bass has an epoxy coated fingerboard.

MM

That's definitely an interesting theme.

You could say it does:
