Does your bass collection have a theme?

Is two basses a collection?

Anyways, if I gathered all the instruments I've had, I'd say that the main theme is... um, is there a theme at all? Long scales?

I dunno. Possible themes for me would be: maple fretboards (but I have an Ibanez with a rosewood fretboard), maybe just Fenders and Ibanezes (sp?). In fact, I think my theme has been light body colours: lake placid blue, flamed amber, butterscotch blonde, silver.

My theme, I guess, is cheaply acquired and good.... while covering a broad functional/sonic range.

Most expensive acquisition was the BTB1206e at $600. Added that to
Conklin GT7
Warwick german Corvette fretless 4
Peavey Grind 4
Tune TWB53
all acquired at great prices.

I once wanted a Ric, but doubt I will ever see one that sounds great at a price I'm willing to pay.

Leo Fender, since it's all Fenders and a Musicman

Ditto for me - Fender, G&L, Musicman. One Spector is the odd man out.

The other theme is a tie in to American muscle cars (Stingray, Mustang, SuperBee)...

I never really stopped to think of my bass collection as having a theme, but now that sit here looking at my basses, yeah, I see:

a body
a neck
a headstock
some tuners
some strings
pickups
a bridge

And each of my basses seem to have these, so, yeah, I think I see a pattern emerging.

Haha! That's like saying you pick out your shirts based on them having sleeves and collars. :)

I bought my RIC 4003 used for $800. Well worth the price!

I know mine does and would like to hear others. Some people might choose different sounds, maybe just color, number of strings, whatever. The theme to my collection is to have all the standards. I know that might be a bit subjective, but this is how I see it. I have MIA Fender P, MIA Fender J, Hofner Viola Bass, and a RIC 4003. To wrap it up, I'm thinking I'll have to add a Gibson Thunderbird and a Musicman Stingray. Does that complete the theme? :) And do you have a theme to your collection?

Hmm. I have a MIA Fender P, a MIA Fender J, a vintage (72) Fender Telecaster bass and an EBMM Stingray. I still want a Rickenbacker. I have few other basses, but like you I wanted the iconic ones. I thought about the Hofner. I played the inexpensive ones and didn't get the allure. I'm not interested enough to consider one of the German ones. Gibsons just never floated my boat.

And do you have a theme to your collection?

Interesting question. Yes. My themes are: 1) modern style, and 2) white or black color.

Every one of my bass guitars is either black or white in color. Each one could be classified as "modern" in form and/or function - definitely not "traditional".

Each instrument has an ebony fretboard or fingerboard. Each fretted bass has either abalone or mother of pearl blocks on the fretboard. Each fretless bass has an epoxy coated fingerboard.

I have one original 1964 Fender Jazz and 13 Fodera Monarch 4-strings. Over the years my Foderas have come to represent each different era for Fodera (1980's, 1990-2009, 2009-present) as well as covering many, many different tone wood and electronic combinations. This has allowed me to speak about the sound of our instruments based on regularly hearing the vast majority of useful combinations.

Covering all the basses is all I try to do. I play metal, funk, country, blues, 80's covers, etc.

5 string active Fodera with dual coils
4 string passive Jazz with rounds
4 string passive P with flats
4 string active Fretless
Acoustic bass

Not many tones I can't nail with these 5 basses IME.

In a similar vein:
Carvin BB75 w/ rounds
1960 P w/ flats
64ri J w/ flats (bright)
Squier VM fretless w/ halfs
1980 German double
