Does your bass collection have a theme?

Right now it's hard to say, because I only have two basses:

1) Fender Kingman acoustic/electric
2) Ibanez SR600

Obviously they're totally different in pretty much every aspect (except for the fact that they both have four strings, I suppose).

Looking at my GAS list I'd say I have no real theme, but you know what they say "variety is the spice of life."

I guess my theme would be SUNBURST or FENDER JAZZ BASSES!

As a younger man I loved pointy basses and wild colors...would not be caught dead in anything 'Fender shaped'...ESPECIALLY sunburst...YUCK.

...Things change

One of each major bass and vastly different characteristics and sounds.

A jazz, a precision, ripper, thunderbird, rick 4001, fretless p (all these ibanez copies). A stingray 30th. An ibanez musician 924.

A 5 string stingray HH. A 5 string jazz but with a graphite neck and bartolinis. A solid mahogany 5 string custom les paul. a A 5 string all maple headless with seymour duncan basslines and duncan EQ.

True. So far, most of my basses have had two pickups.

So there ya' go, I already found four themes:
- Light body color
- Two pickups (this might change if I get a P bass)
- Slinky's standard gauge strings (this might probably change along the way)
- Neither the cheapest cheapos nor the costliest high ends (along the $300-$700 range)

My basses have a theme. That theme for the last 17 years is "What can I get for less than a grand?" Before that, the theme was, "Hey, I got a $1500 check from my student loan. I'm gonna blow it on a bass!"

Same here. I live by the $500 rule when it comes to a bass. I just bought a $200 Mono Vertigo soft case to carry a $180 Gretsch Junior Jet. Something is wrong.

Yes, I'm quoting myself.

My theme of cheap basses continues as I just scored a Danelectro Danoblaster on eBay for $112.50. Again, I'll have to buy a soft case that costs more than bass.

All of my basses were made in Asia and all were purchased on eBay: Fender Modern Player Telecaster (China), Gretsch Junior Jet 2202 (China), and Danelectro Danoblaster Rumor (Korea).

My theme is to have a vintage or retro look to whatever Bass I acquire. I not willing to pay the high prices for true vintage so I tend to go with lower cost retro-style. Although I have a sunburst Japanese Fender 1975 Jazz Bass reissue I am currently most interested in hollow or semi-hollow short-scales or long-scales. I have two Basses that fit this theme so far: Epiphone Allen Woody and Italia Torino. Basses under consideration for future purchase include:

Gretsch Electromatic G5442BDC

Italia Rimini

Hagstrom Viking

Gibson Midtown

Warwick Pro Series Star Bass

OK, I have five basses, which I guess is a collection.

The theme? All Fender designs! (except for the one that isn't). All four strings! (except for the two that aren't). All passive! (except for the two that aren't). All bright colors! (except for the two that aren't). All maple fingerboards! (except for the two that aren't). All made in North America! (except for the one that isn't). All fretted! (except for the one that isn't).

OK, let's try this:

All are basses that Lpdeluxe likes to play! (we have a winner).

First runner up: All 34" scale!

second runner up: All flatwound strings!

For what it's worth, this collection consists of a Fender Classic '51 P in butterscotch (maple board, CIJ), a Fender Classic '50 P in fiesta red (maple board, MIM), a Fender AVRI '57 P in sunburst (maple board, MIA), a MusicMan StingRay 5 in honey burst (rosewood board, MIA), and a Godin A5 Fretless in natural (ebony board, MIC [Canada]).
