Does your bass collection have a theme?

I have both a MIA P and Jazz currently I also own a MIM J (not listed in sig as its an unplayable, project currently in pieces). So my Theme would be "Fender" I guess. I plan on sticking to this theme going forth as I have it in my head that I want my collection to grow to consist of a MIA, MIJ (CIJ), and MIM pairing if P's and J's.

I guess my theme would be SUNBURST or FENDER JAZZ BASSES!

As a younger man I loved pointy basses and wild colors...would not be caught dead in anything 'Fender shaped'...ESPECIALLY sunburst...YUCK.

...Things change

That's definitely an interesting collection.

I should say so!

As a band it's the plan to make material for three concept albums, in the form of a trilogy. My three basses all represent one album, and it's my goal to be able to play them completely with their respective basses. It's all still very WIP though, and we don't expect to finish them all until a year or two.
Also, every bass is somehow paired to a guitar.

The first album focusses on petty crimes and the adventures of a handful of characters, one of which is called "Red Rosie" (the name of this bass). She forms a pair with our guitarist's sunburst Fender Jazzmaster.

The second album is about a big road trip in a nameless desert, and features more than one stoner rock song. This bass, a Squier VM Jazz by the name of Marilyn, is tuned in C standard (allowing me to play a lot of Kyuss and QotSA) and is accompanied by my Fender Strat called Hadassah, tuned in D standard.

The third and last album has more of a mythological tone, with the god Apollo wandering through the desert and a sailor spending his days in a harbour town (which tragically hasn't seen water for years). I picked up this bass recently, and IMO it really completes my sound. This baby's paired up with another Ibanez, more because of their similar looks than their thematical significance. I tuned it down to BEAD, in order to prevent warping of the neck. That, and the ability to play some Slipknot!

I may be taking this whole thing a little bit too serious, though :smug:

I don't really think of my basses as a collection, more as a set of tools since no two are identical. A collection doesn't have to be identical of course but a collection is assembled out of the love of collecting while a tool set is assembled to have the right tool for the right job and that is what drove me to buy what I have. Anyway up until now I thought I was in a rut since my basses, though different, are all MIM and all Jazz Basses. Turns out I am not in a rut at all; I just have a theme!

Ken :D

OK, first off, I am envious of rootsnfifths, ilove that collection! My collection is a lot of things: diverse configs, and cheap. But within that there are subthemes:

Wow, envious of mine? Right back atcha Dabbler!
Awesome collection there...love the 'blue' and the sunburst sub-themes the best!

I feel so much better after looking at yours. And I just got rid of a couple other 'bursts!

Cool stuff, I say.

I guess if there's a theme for mine, it would be SYMMETRY

  • 3 4-strings / 3 5-strings
  • 3 neck thru / 3 bolt on
  • 2 light wood finishes / 2 dark wood finishes / 2 burst finishes
  • 3 ebony boards / 3 maple boards
  • 3 with pickguards / 3 without pickguards
  • 3 with brass nuts / 3 without
  • 3 with adjustable nuts / 3 without

All have soapbar pickups....guess that's a theme.

And then there's this....

My theme only applies to the stuff on the stands. The gear on the chairs belongs to my kids.

Another theme for my collection......INNOVATION

Two Alembics. Alembic was first with....
  • Active basses
  • Adjustable nut
  • Hippy sandwich
  • LEDs
  • Not sure if they were first with off-board electronics, but think so, since that was part of the active bass setup

Two Music Man basses.
  • First active mass production bass
  • Unique 3+1 headstock configuration
