Double Sevens

I got the headstocks leveled to the necks. Much easier and quicker this time than it has been in the past. I was able to just use the fret leveling beam with 80 grit paper on it and it leveled out easily.

After that, I setup the router sled for the truss rod routes.

I'm not sure if you can entirely tell what's going on in these pictures, but basically I have a neck propped up, with double sided tape holding everything together, then I clamped 2 blocks at each end to hold it in place because I didn't want to actually trust the tape to hold it all for this operation. I also have blocks holding the sled in place on the rails so it can't move side to side on me when I'm trying to route a straight line.

This setup worked really well. It was difficult on the last bass I made since that had a longer neck (a neck through 35" scale bass neck) that had to fit underneath the rails, with an angled headstock, and I think the truss rod also might have been too long to route for in one pass on this sled, if I remember right. This router sled works a lot better for guitars than basses. When I have more room, I'll probably make something bigger that's more versatile. I need it to be wider for bodies too.

Here's how I propped up the neck so it was level, without the headstock angle being in the way.

The blocks at the headstock end are angled in and just kind of wedge it in place.

I had to use thick blocks at the other end to reach the neck since it was propped up. Since the clamps wouldn't reach in that far, I used other longer pieces of wood to butt up against those blocks to hold them in place. The butt end of this neck ended up hitting against the sled rail, but the other neck was a little shorter and I had to clamp a block behind it to keep it from moving in that direction.

Another advantage to the size of a guitar's truss rod vs. bass truss rod is that I can actually test fit it in the neck without having to move anything.

It was a nice day, so I decided to take pictures in the drive way instead of the basement this time.

I did make plugs for the end of the truss rod channels, under the nuts, and I cut the end of the fretboards off at the nut slots and triangle filed the fret slots (in this picture, the ziricote fretboard was already triangle filed, so that's why the slots appear a little bigger than the katalox one).

I think ziricote was the perfect choice to go with this myrtle, so I'm pretty excited about seeing how it turns out all together. :) I'll try to get another picture where you can see the headstock veneer next to the fretboard better.

I'm planning on gluing one of the fretboards on today and the other sometime during the week.

I cannot find the nuts for these anywhere... I need to do some more searching. They aren't with all of the other parts for these guitars for some reason and I have no idea where else they would be.
