Vintage wind is most likely best, retains clarity, especially as the pickup location approaches the neck. If it was too hot and too close to the fretboard, it would take on a Mudbucker tone, which isn't for everyone.

I have a Bill Lawrence pickup in my "neck" position (it's really closer to the traditional P sweet spot). It's pretty warm, and I like to dial in a little bit of the bridge to add clarity, but it's definitely not muddy by any means.

I’d put the 2 P pickups as far apart as you can. It will give you more variety.
That is in consideration.
Have a set of highway one p pups i may try, in lieu of the bucker and korean single bar p ceramics that i initially put to just to try.
Don't want super hot pups in neck position i suppose, would have to sink them too far. p
EMG has so many varieties available, and preamp options too.
Well, I'm at it again. Sometimes, I get an idea in my head and my brain just won't give me any peace!!
Years ago, I bought new from Sweetwater or MF (can't remember) a MIJ 70s Fender P. The neck on that thing restored my faith in Fender! Despite the gloss finish, it played as well as a US Lakland, which is my gold standard. It had a black blocked maple fretboard, white body, and a black pickguard. I spent a small fortune decking it out with all black Hipshot hardware (including a d-tuner), black aluminum Sadowsky style knobs, black neck plate....everything black including the screws! I tried hard, but it was my last attempt at loving a standard P bass! In the end, I spent another small fortune and bought a used natural MIM Fender jazz body, and I completely blacked it out too. I put Bartolini pups and preamp in it, and I bolted the 70s P neck to it. It plays like a dream. But, I'm unable to bond with jazz basses too, and that was my last attempt at trying to like one. SMH!!!
So, I've had this wonderful neck that deserves a better fate, and 2 bass bodies w/ all the glorious black Hipshot hardware and Bartolini pups n guts that aren't getting any action.
So earlier, I gave in to my obsessive brain, and I ordered a Warmoth P bass body that will be routed for 2 reverse split P pickups (in different locations than my Carlo has). It will be very sparkly and will probably have 2 different active EMGs in it. I'll see how the black hardware looks on it. But, I suspect that the original chrome Fender P stuff will look better, and I'll be selling a ton of minty parts.
I will post pics when I start the build.

Pickups, for anyone interested, are neck-EMG PAX for a vintage tone, and bridge-EMG PCSX for as EMG states “brilliant high-end articulation and incredible low end punch”. The bridge pickup is centered exactly where my Stingray’s humbuckers fall when measured from the 12th fret, so I wanted to be able to get that sound that I love so much, while having all the warm thump I could ever want from the neck pickup. There’s an 18 volt battery box on the back, so I can add a preamp at any time, should I feel the need.
You’ve got the pickups arranged exactly how I’ve been thinking about doing it. Bridge pickup in the strongest position and the neck pickup with the E and A half in the regular position and the D and G flipped closer to the neck. I’d be interested in hearing some sound clips once it’s done.
Actually, that’s not what I did at all. A standard P has the pickup’s centerline at 4.75” from the start of the neck pocket (roughly where a 21st fret would fall). My pickup’s centerlines are at 2.5” and 6.75” from the neck pocket.
Ha, yep! I got the neck pickup placement idea from my Lakland Scheff. There’s something magical about having a pickup that close to the neck w/ the other one in a sweetspot, Rickenbacker for instance, or Billy Sheehan’s Yamaha basses.

Thanks! Warmoth calls it Goblin Flake and it honestly doesn’t come close in photos, compared to reality! The flake is predominantly gold and at least 3 times more brilliant in person, than what my flippin phone can capture! I’m super pleased with it!
I’ll probably end up building an Inferno Flake bass eventually... or another Warmoth flake. They offer limited runs, from time to time, of wild flake paint jobs. I remember a red white and blue flake on 4th of July once. I passed due to the body and route choices.
