Dumb Salesman at GC

I saw a salesman playing Guitar on a Twin Reverb, I asked him if the Twin Reverb has an alternator. He was very puzzled, cocked his head at the amp, but I didn't tell him what it is. LOL

Wow. Lame.

I couldn't resist it. It made me feel better about passing one by at a Goodwill for $75 about 20 years ago. I didn't know what it was.

if the guy was actually dumb, good for him for finding a job he can hold onto and poor for those who make fun of him for something he can't control - insulting those who we perceive as lesser or weaker than themselves makes me deeply sad.

if he wasn't dumb and simply didn't get your joke due to lack of information (not a sign of dumbness - we all have things we don't know) or because he was trying to be nice to the customer (you), also not so great to make fun of him.

I'm not exactly sure what an alternator is in an amp. Until a couple of years ago I'd seen the term HPF and LPF but wasn't exactly sure what they were or did. I've learned a lot on TalkBass! Unfortunately that's led to too many purchases since joining Talkbass, LOL!

Yep. I’ve worked in retail sales before. Rule was you never sassed back with anybody over anything. Just smile politely and let them think you were dumb. That usually ended it. But if it continued you just flagged the manager. If somebody was gonna play games with or tell a customer off, that was the store manager’s prerogative, not the staff’s.

Seems to me the OP is the original troll and the employee had the appropriate response to a total dud of a joke that wasn't even remotely funny.

I'm going to guess he has a back catalog of stories the end with a "darned if do, darned if you don't" situation.

I am always confounded by people who try and shame others who are working perfectly honest jobs. There is nothing wrong with working at Guitar Center. I am sure that he wishes that he had a higher paying job. I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he is a hard working person and respect the fact that he is actually working. I know there are people on here who expect that the GC salespeople should know everything about everything in that store, but that is just ridiculous. I have to say, that I have very rarely, if ever, been let down by someone working there. I don't expect perfection and I don't expect them to know everything, most of them seem to know their limitations and always get help from the others there if they don't know about what I am asking. I guarantee that I could come to your job, you know, if you have one and find something there that you know nothing about. I can also guarantee that it won't be some ridiculous fake made up thing that makes me look dumb. You have to love a good troll post that backfires!!!
