In my previous life, I worked retail and I was guilty of that kind of behavior toward customers
It was at a department store, so it didn't hurt MY particular sales, and it always ended with a smile, when the other person figured out the joke and did not get offended... It didn't help that my department (Electric Avenue!!!), was located on the way to the restrooms...

In college (mid 90's) I worked at a place that rhymed with "Beers" in the Electronics department - phones, computers, typewriters. And supplies for them.

I had a customer buying a typewriter ribbon who I tried to crack a joke with. It didn't go over, and he gave me a dry look and said, "Stick to your day job."

At the register he then asked me if I was sure the ribbon was the right one for his typewriter. I replied "Sir, this is my day job."

Pause 3 seconds, we both laugh, life went on.

So you don't think that guys life is difficult enough already ? You felt the need to go in and mess with him?

Part of me feels badly for anyone working minimum wage or low paying jobs...

This is like a repeating theme that never ends … followed closely by the "Guitar Center is going out of business soon"

But I must admit that I have met many GC sales people who had a fairly complete lack of knowledge of musical instruments and gear … they often make up for their lack of knowledge by smelling bad and having black fingernails

But there are a few sharp, smart, people there as well
