That is fantastic. So glad to hear it.

Im really enjoying playing at PCC. I can't believe that I've been there for a couple of years already. Playing with some really talented folks in both bands and finally have a decent working knowledge of P&W/CC. Currently trying to find a young whipper snapper to plug in to the student ministry band.

I've played out here and there on fill-ins but I'm kind of burnt on the whole classic rock bar band thing. I found myself getting really depressed seeing people my age flat tanked. Having fun is one thing, but if you're laid out like a garage sale and my age or older, you may want to reevaluate your personal life.

I need to find something interesting and musically engaging to do, I'm just not sure what yet. Maybe I'll go play Death-grass. ;)

Nah, this is the first time in 10 years I have not played the Oak Ridge Playhouse holiday show that starts on Thanksgiving. Nothing going on for Christmas or NYE either. I just haven't been able to break into any music circles in Knoxville that yield those kinds of gigs.

Forgot to mention I played a Christmas Cantata at First UMC in Alcoa couple Sundays ago, and will play a miniature Cantata same place Christmas Eve.

Felt a little out of place with all these musicians (brass, woodwind) sight reading their parts and there I was mostly watching the pianist' left hand.

I can read, barely, but not sight read, so I always feel slightly in over my head at these gigs, but they keep asking me back every year, and I always have a blast!

Jeff asked if I'd contact the TB admins and request the three ETTB threads be merged/combined into one, now that the 1000-post limit has been removed.

Slightly reticent to talk to admins/mods after I got spanked last year, I thought to myself, I've given them enough money since 2004, so I'm asking! And so I did. Look for the One Big Ol' East Tennessee TalkBass thread, coming soon.

Well I'll be. We finally have a unified East Tennessee Talkbass thread! It's BIG! Thanks to David Wilson, Talkbass co-administrator, oh he of the Peabody martini glass avatar. I always liked David Wilson's posts, so it is very fitting.

So.. here we go! What's everyone up to, here in mid-January?

I've played recently with a group of friends, most of whom are psychologists (!) and last week's house jam (wouldn't call it a rehearsal!) sounded pretty good at times. We had a guy there playing accordian and some keys, and he's from Louisiana, so we got into some zydeco and cajun stuff that was a lot of fun. Other than that, the best stuff was just good old blues jamming in various styles. Fun! I don't know if this group will ever make it out of the drummer's house, but it's something fun to do every so often.

Heads-up: My favorite rock guitar playing gal, Kelly Richey from Cincinnati, is playing Barley's in Maryville this Sunday night, Jan. 17. She leads a power blues trio in the vein of Hendrix, and has always been an impressive player and stage presence. I am hearing nothing but good things about her new bass player and drummer.

In the midst of rehearsals for Swing at the Jonesborough Rep. Shows start next weekend (friends and family this thurs) and run through Valentine's Day. Had to find a sub for the community jazz band 2/13 gig, but had let the director know well in advance--and the sub is a monster reader, so nobody is sweating it.

Swing is hard. The chart is written for all upright, but the Broadway cast recording has a few on electric, so I'm cheating on a couple where I can groove better--or, in one case, actually play the damn thing! I'm competent on upright, but 5 years of bluegrass didn't quite prepare me for 90 straight minutes of hard driving, up tempo swing. I'm working my tail off. :bassist: <--[need one of these with an upright player]

I've been jamming some jazzy stuff with a really talented keys player (and drummer) lately; starting to think about digging up a singer that leans towards jazz-pop (standards plus Adele, Robinella, or similar?) and booking some light, classy venues. Not sure what opportunitues exist around here, but I know keys-guy and I would enjoy it. Just thinking. I'll keep you posted. ;)
