Yep, had a good time with my buds and there were more basses to play than I could really spend quality time with. As always, I came away from the GTG with more knowledge than I came in with.

Seeing Michael perform was great, getting to watch it with Richard and Kim was even more so, we got to chat quite a bit before the performance, intermission and after the show.

Only thing I had not considered was the time change, we rolled into Murrville about 1:20 and had to get up at 6 for rehearsal at church. Don't ask me what the sermon was about lol.....

Jeff E., Richard and Jeff R.: I'm just now getting a chance to tell you here how much I appreciated your support in coming to see Bridges. It meant a lot to me! I'm glad that Laurel and Kim wanted to come with you and that they enjoyed the show as well. (I sort of thought they would!)

It was one of the best-ever musical experiences I've had in my 25 years of playing shows. I loved the overall score and the bass book, and I couldn't have asked for better musicians to collaborate with. Encore treated me very well on my first production with them, and I hope to do more there in the future.

The GTG was small, as usual, but it was fun to hang out and talk about bass things with Jeff R. and Richard. Richard did play Jeff R.'s two basses and Jeff played several of Richard's. I just loafed around, ate my Pal's food, and didn't play any - I was saving my hands and wrists after playing the show Friday night and Saturday matinee and then again after the GTG. It was nice to have the down time between shows with my friends.

My show setup was the blonde Douglas violin bass with Chromes flatwounds-the one you can see in my profile picture (partially!), the Quilter BB800- which I brought over to the GTG, and one Acme B-1 Series III cab. It worked great, was easy to play and transport, and sounded terrific onstage. The idea was to get a deep tone with some woody resonance and not much top end. The sound tech really liked the tone he was getting in the house from the BB800 DI. He warned me he was going to turn me up, and with the subwoofer set that the sound design used, I bet it was lowww in the house! I got tone compliments from several other people who came up after performances. I'll use that setup again!

Hey folks,,, have a quick question,,, someone mentioned that there is a version of ZZ Top's LaGrange that has a small walking bass line in the middle break. I have looked all over but I cant find any live or recorded versions with it. I can do a walking bassline but would love to hear the actual line if anyone knows what album or cut it's on.

Maurice, I play it the way it sounds to me on the recording. First verse repeats the A over and over and second verse alternates between A and C (third) giving it a rocking blues feel. I play that through the lead, as well. Hope this helps.

Edit - OOPS - should have finished reading your entire post. Never heard the version with a walking bass line in the lead break.

Hey guys... If anybody is interested, I have a 60's ri Fender Jazz with matching headstock I am desperately trying to sell. I would do a great deal for a local sale to one of you guys.. May also have to sell my Warwick 6 string Corvette if anybody is interested......
Unfortunately I have ran into vehicle problems costing over 3 grand, as well as a couple of vists to the hospital and racking up bills from those trips.... I could sure use your prayers right now as well... Health isnt real good at the moment....
Thanks guys... The basses are in great shape. Just ask anybody who knows me. I take care of my gear, and I hardly get to play these days at all unfortunately... Spread the word please if you know somebody that might be interested.

Hey all.. I am playing Maryville High School's production of Little Shop of Horrors tomorrow night, May 4, and then Friday and Saturday nights. This is a little late notice, but if any of you want to come out, I'd love to see you there!

We have an excellent guitarist and drummer for the show, and the other musicians are very good. House opens at 6:30 PM, and shows start at 7 PM each night.Here's the Google Maps link to MHS. Here's the link to the Maryville Daily Times' article

I'll be playing my recently finished Warmoth J bass with Bartolini B-Axis pickups into my Genz Shuttle 9.2 12.2T combo. Very nice combination. My hat's off to Alex Weatherly of Bolt Electronics here in Knoxville who did the shielding and electronics work for me. I am very pleased. If any of you in the Knoxville area need wiring work done, message me here on TB and I'll pass along his contact information.

Congrats, Jeff! Good to hear. Where are you gigging?

I'm sitting in with the Tusculum College Jazz Band at Jonesborough's Music on the Square this Friday (the jazz band opens the summer series over there). Next up is All Shook Up (which, as you can imagine, is a rock and roll review theater show) at Johnson City Community Theater in July (we're going camping & festival-ing this summer, so I've blocked everything until after July 5th).

I'm filling in with a bro country band for a last minute Cinco show tomorrow, and then a large corporate event down past Chattanooga on Saturday.

The project I'm most excited about is a group of Chicago retirees I jammed with last night. All experienced road pros, with money, time and, most important, skill on their hands.

I've always wanted to play 25 or 6 to 4, but never had a group around me that could pull it off. I sang and we played it last night like we had been doing it for years.
Band is big, 7 members, but there are gigs out there that will hire a band with a horn section. Very diverse catalogue, lots of obscure oldies and standards.
I may finally be free from the honky tonks I've spent the majority of my career in.

Ditto on the congrats, Jeff! Let us know on here when and where. I forgot to add my last one myself, but I played for the Morristown East High School Choir's Spring Pops concert and I'm playing with them at a church performance this Sunday.

Won't be able to make it, Michael. Would love to hear you play again, though.

Jeff E., that sounds like a fun gig. My youngest daughter graduates from Tusculum this Saturday.

Oh, and I traded my Fender American Deluxe Jazz 5 for an EBMM Stingray 5 (thanks for the GAS, Barry). The Fender was a nicer bass, but the aggressive tone of the MM suits the majority of my playing better.

You nailed it exactly. Jazz standards, occasional singer song, and occasional contemporary. We did some Earth, Wind & Fire last year, which was super fun, but generally its big band standards (also fun). Not too much stretch--I love the song Birdland, and got to do that last year. Standard Christmas performance every year, etc. One or two shows (out of 8-9) a year I bring the upright for a set, which the director dug. This is the end of year performance for them, and opens the summer concert series for Jonesborough. I'm only bringing the electric.

I volunteered with them for a couple of years, but we moved in December and it's a much longer drive in the middle of the afternoon (I used to take my lunch "hour" twice a week to attend the class) now, so I haven't been to any rehearsals this semester--hope to make the one tonight! But the book won't be too difficult, either way. :thumbsup:

Not necessarily that song, though it's a good'n, but just I Know That Exact Feeling. Very, very cool. By "Chicago retirees", do you mean they retired from the BAND Chicago? Because, woah, if so. :bassist:

The bluegrass band of the past 5 years only played a few honky tonks, thankfully--I really had my fill of playing in those years ago, so I've avoided any possible entanglements that would take me back down that road. No qualms about grabbing a beer or a bar burger in one, but seriously don't want to work until 2am in one any more.

Great to hear, man.
