Did Santa bring anyone new gear?
He skipped me (I knew he would), so I scrounged these up before Christmas:
75 Fender Super Twin re-homed in an after market case
Bergantino NV412
And my old Dingwall AB1 of course.

Well, it didn't come from Santa, but.....my ThunderFunk head was in the shop (being serviced by Dave) - after waiting almost two months, I bit the bullet and aquired this Eich T-1000 head. Of course, the TFunk head showed up two days later. Anyway, I've been playing through the Eich for about a month now and have really enjoyed the tone I get so far. There is still some familiarity to be made in fine tuning some of the controls, but overall a very solid and power amp. Not sure yet if I'll end up keeping both amps or getting rid of one of them, and in that case, which one. Time will tell.

We stayed in. I turned 50 a couple of days before the year ended, and had a bunch of musician friends over for a hang and pick. Bluegrass and jazz. Was loose, lightweight, and fun.

Christmas roundup: A friend gave me an old Casio Privia he had in his closet for over a decade; I've been taking a few classes at ETSU just for something to do (sort of) and the piano jazz class I took with Jason Day (Knoxville) blew my mind. So much I never knew that I didn't know. So I've been working on piano, mostly, trying to get my theory and chops to a level where I can play what I can hear/envision. I'll never be Bill Evans, but I've been struggling with *really* understanding jazz on the bass, and this is helping.
No new bass gear to speak of, but I'm pretty content with my current setup. I've almost complete the move to all 32" scale, and have my eyes open for a moderately priced 5-string that will replace my Ibby. But with no serious gigs, I don't have a good justification for that purchase, yet. Plus there's the ever-present question about how a low B can work in a medium scale... doing my research.

Gig roundup: Playing a theater show with Jonesborough Rep end of Jan, beginning of Feb--"Meet Me in St Louis." May have another spring show in the works. Very little bluegrass in the past year, one-offs here and there. The band was sort of forced into hiatus when we lost our guitarist; we were already having trouble finding a fourth on a regular basis, so the banjo player and I started a blues duo (he's an old-school fingerstyle guitar picker, also). That may see some action in 2018, will keep you posted. :bassist:
I also picked up a couple of local church gigs which have been fun.

What's everyone else up to? Is Paul building amazing things we should hear about? How's the Knoxville/Maryville scene these days, Jeff? I think I saw Barry buying and selling some this year... :)

Happy New Year guys!!! Yeah I know I am a little late to the party lol... Been a little busy... I just got engaged on Christmas Eve to a wonderful lady, and we just bought a house not long ago, so we have been busy busy busy. Really happy though and hopefully wrapping things up this week with the move and everything.

I actually put off buying the new gear I was talking about a little while back until we got thru the holidays with everything I had going on. So, hopefully, I will be ordering in the next couple of weeks... Lots of new cool stuff coming and I will post pics when I get the gear.
I am very happy with my bass setup now, though like most people I would love to have a few more!!!
Hope everything is going good for everyone... A friend of mine and myself are trying to start up a duo project so hoping that goes well, and I am hoping to start playing in church again soon. My fiance has been such an encouragement to me and backs me 100% and has really wanted me to get back into playing, so sure hoping I can!!!!

My goodness gracious. All that natural wood. That's amazing. A good variety of pickups and string numbers, too. Thanks for sharing the pic!

Warwicks are excellent basses, but don't seem to be as commonly seen out there as they were back in the 90's and 00's. There probably aren't many bassists that collect them like you do. Do you have any non-Warwick basses?

Hey Michael thanks for the compliments!!! I love them for sure... They just have the tone that I like over everything.. they are all a little different, and I have a few mods to do on them, like changing hardware color, adding the brass adjust a nut to all of them, and some pup/preamp changes in the future.
I just got thru selling a Jazz bass, a Ric, and have had tons of other basses.
I have found, that for whatever reason, I like the Warwick B string over any other 5 String out there. So, I have decided to let everything go except the Warwicks..... Now I am still gonna get a 4 string Jazz, 4 string P, 4 string Stingray, and probably a few other 4's in the future but the Warwicks are all I have at the moment.
I sold my Aguilar rig to Thumpin P (Paul) last year. It was two 1x15 cabs and the Tone Hammer 500 head. Last I heard he loved it. I only sold that because I am getting a new Aguilar rig here soon (can't wait to hear it).
The Aguilar stuff just seems to fit perfect with the Warwicks. And any other type bass for that matter.
I am just really excited about playing again. I couldn't for so long due to illness, and sold so much of my stuff years ago because of it. If I hadn't been forced to sell stuff, I would have around 25 Warwicks now... But for sure I am blessed to have what I do now. I know we all go thru seasons of difficult times, and I am just thankful to be able to play more again..... Gotta hit the shed and get to practicing though for sure!!!!

February, grr. Hurry spring!

Finished a run of the musical Beauty and the Beast the first week of the month, enjoyed the music tremendously. It was pretty hard, but memorable!

A couple weekends ago, I went to hear a drummer friend play. He's in the Mike Snodgrass Band. They play covers, originals, are in a jam band vein. Sax, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass and drums. Really good! They are sort of the house band for the Wild Wing Cafes in east Tennessee, and rotate among the five locations. Check them out sometime.

Hey all. Spring has sprung up here in the mountains, and we’re finally getting things in the garden (and out of the house, where my partner has her starts going on every available horizontal space).

Gig tonight at Yee Haw Brewery with the Bluegrass/Old-Time band. Banjo player has a bum knee, so it will be interesting! Going to be a lively night in Johnson City: block parties downtown and the weather will have everyone out.

Filling in next Thursday with jazz friends at Blackbird Bakery in Bristol. The bakery has a regular schedule of music... I didn’t know they booked so much. Low volume, but looks like a good gig. Coffee and pastries are also pretty slammin’.

Come out if you’re in the area!
