EBMM Music Man Basses...why so much $?

I was a serial bass buyer/seller/buyer/seller .... I was never happy UNTIL I bought a couple Ernie Balls. I now have a 10 year old SR5 and a 7-ish year old Bongo 5 and they are both rock solid. A gig never goes by where I don't get comments on the Bongo sound (my main bass). The SR5 still seems like it's new. And for what it is worth, the support is excellent. When I have a question, I get an email back in about a day. I love that.

I would say the value is there, especially compared to MIA Fenders, etc.

Ok now back up. I happen to own both, and I use my Squier at every gig. Oh and I don't play in Mom's basement.

Sure you would tough guy. I do understand one thing for sure, but "it would reflect poorly" on me if I said it. But thanks for dumbing it down for the rest of us Mr. Von Hayek. You're right about one thing though, if the price for a 20 plus year old Stingray is anything over $500 or so, I won't buy it. Maybe that means i won't be getting one. C'est la vie. But thanks for sharing your vast wisdom.

Wow. Give it a break guys. Let's all be friends. I'll be Derek Smalls here... Luke warm water lol...

I suspect georgestrings isn't kidding, based on the pics of him I've seen ;-) anyhow I like a guy that plays an ebmm usa sub bass.

But yea, we all get our days when we write something that didn't come across well... I sure as hell do. Everyone who's being insulted here has something valid to contribute, even if most others have a different view.

Economics can totally suck and ruin someone's life with its unpredictability..... so how weird it is with basses seems trivial in it's lack of real significance. So let's maybe keep the conservation of the same merit... insignificant but interesting.

Strange note: on my phone keyboard, when I typed "weird" above it turned it into Weymouth lol

Kinda of the perfect tb typo eh? Gotta love Tina....

Yeah, I'm not kidding - I've never hidden the fact that I'm a working musician in Syracuse, NY - and what band I'm in at any given moment... My gigging schedule is out there for the whole world to see - and just like I made the offer to one of our NYC TBers, anyone can come see me any time they want... Truth is, I often "sugar coat" what I'd *really* like to say here, due to requests by the mods - in person, I'm WAY more direct...

I will admit that I probably came across a bit more harsh than warranted, but the old "I think(fill in the blank) is really over-priced" routine gets old... IMO, it's just an underhanded way of slamming the gear choices of others... If someone thinks something is "over-priced", THEN DON'T BUY IT!!! Buy what YOU want, play what YOU want, and don't fret about other people's choices - you'll be alot happier that way...

personally I think they are priced ok. For a production instrument I think they pay a little bit more attention to their instrument than say Fender and they are priced around the same. My favorite factory tour on youtube



and I'm not a fan of Sterling Ball but I admire his drive and passion for the instrument ;)

No doubt that Sterling Ball marches to his own beat, but the man consistantly puts out great instruments, and stands behind them...

Oh grow up Geo. My whole life I've never made a habit of backing down and have scars and broken knuckles to prove it. Years ago I did the online tough guy routine like you're doing now and ended up in a ski resort parking lot face to face with a 45 year old ex-special forces guy who could have killed me without much effort. He bought me a drink instead and we skied some runs together and became friends but I never made even veiled online offers of physical confrontation after that. It's foolish on a whole bunch of levels so just knock it off.

I own two Ernie Ball Basses and have paid about that for each of them and they are worth every penny. They have sounded great in the studio during recording sessions and live have never let me down. I actually consider the $1500 price tag to be a bargain.

I used to have the receipt for my Gibson T Bird. I paid 414 bucks for that bass in 1976, new. That was a lot of money. Two job type of money.

I was glad to be able to pay it. $1500 seems like a bargain for a pro quality bass today. If it's too much great basses abound all over ebay and craigs for less than 5 beans. Sometimes a lot less.

Large parts of the rest of the world is worried about clean water and food for their kids. We worry about flats v rounds or how much we pay for primo quality bass.

I suggest we all thank whatever we hold holy that we are able to focus on such trivia. The fact that we have clean water, food and shelter is a miracle.

I am a fan of EBMM basses but couldn't buy my first one until 2006. I had been admiring them back in the late 90's when a new SR5 sold for about $2000 here in Canada. My new SR5 in 2006 cost me $1710. This year I bought another new 2013 SR5 for $1650. Seems like they have come down in price since the 90's.

I have bought a few used EBMM basses as well all for around the $1000 mark in mint condition. They hold their value reasonably well as do USA Fenders. Compare that to a Warwick or many other boutique bases and you will see they depreciate at a dramatically higher rate.

I hate to see a thread get ugly. The OP doesn't think a Stingray is worth the new asking price. Some agree and many disagree. I'm just glad I have been able to find some amazing EBMM basses on the used market for what I consider to be good and fair prices and don't regret what I paid for my new ones either.

Inflation, supply and demand. A used ANYTHING will go for what the market will bear.

Not a bass, but I also play guitar. In 1991 I bought a Les Paul Studio, wine red, nickel hardware, ebony fretboard.

It cost me $500

I sold it it 1995 for $450

In 2000 I regretted selling it and started looking for another one.

Many early 90's LP studios came up. Almost all of them had rosewood boards and gold hardware. The two time I found the models and features I was looking for, they had headstock repairs.

The search continued.

For 12 years!

Late 2012 I found a 1991 Les Paul Studio in wine red with an ebony board and nickle hardware. On the other side of the country.

I paid $1300 for the guitar, plus shipping from Washington to CT.

That was more than the $500 I paid in 1991.

Oh well, it was what the market demanded and I got what I wanted.

I have one of those in black. Great guitar. Mine is a pre lightened guitar and I think that makes a difference
