EBMM StingRay Special Club

Are the necks similar in shape and feel. Unusually don’t like painted necks. One reason I sold my US SUB.
Yeah, I mean, that's a pretty expensive way of getting a light weight genuine EBMM, but putting the '83 preamp in a Special would work (and just accept that you have a redundant output jack, on the side of the bass).
It may be in this very thread, but a few years back I noticed some rock band playing at The Reading Festival, where the bassist had swapped out the preamp on his Special, for a 2 bander.
I think the video got posted (maybe by me????), and somebody posted an interview with the guy.
Apparently there are some light weight 80's / 90's StingRays out there, but I don't think I've ever played one much below 9lbs - that said, I've absolutely no idea how much mine weighs (I'm guessing around the 10lb mark).
I would try to deal with the weight, rather than some extreme mod...they make straps for heavy bass's that really help. I have a Rockready UltraStrap 3.5 Guitar Strap and a Levy's Leathers 4 inch, both really help for long gigs and multiple 1 hr sets.

I won't touch the 83' as far as removing parts.
Some years back a board member made circuit boards that were copies of the original 2-band pre. Another board member made a prewired pre for me, plus Mojotone makes a copy.
Which pickup would be the closest candidate? Maybe the Duncan?
I found my ancient OLP today, cleaned it up, and installed some strings and it plays well. Sounds decent too and I'm thinking modding this bass is the only sane route to get where I want to go.
I do need to try one of the 1 1/2" necks that seem to dominate Ernie / Sterling Ball's lineup just to see if it could work.
It's hard to believe that the demand dried up so much that they don't make the same SR model that made the company famous.

same string spacing, same nut, but the neck is a bit thinner. For a painted neck it’s smoooooth! I have heard of owners parting ways due to the painted neck, however they have made Bongos with natural necks, which I originally wanted. Turns out the painted neck and I get along great on these though.

Compared to my non-Special, non-Classic 4H 3-band, which has a HPF, it seems to me that this bass either has its HPF cutoff lowered a lot (for the B string of course), or no HPF at all. Does anyone know?

As I previously posted I recently picked up a 2018 Special here on the classifieds, almost in new condition. I took it to my Luthier, one of the top in the game, and he noticed a slight dip in the neck and some frets not fully seated, and the nut slot was v’d a little, so the string would not fully seat. He was able to fix it all and said it was fairly normal for mass produced “Fender types”. It plays great now, and I can get pretty low action, and he stated it wasn’t anything that should cause any further issues. Just curious if anyone else had a similar issue, or if I can chalk this up to the first run of a new model, wood settled, etc?

This is the first time I've seen these pickup height numbers. Makes sense because the magnets are so strong.
I guess these measurements are without pressing the string down.

I’m assuming that’s measured top of pickup to bottom so string?
It doesn't say whether from top of pole piece or top of plastic. EDIT: but very little difference between those two on these pickups.

I’m planning to get a 2nd one in the not too distant future. I’ve got a 5 HH in smoked chrome, and I’m planning on adding a 5 H in snowy night (that’s the #1 choice for now anyway).

I might consider it, but with shipping and customs, it would hardly be economical for you.
Coming from Berlin... ya, not worth it. I'm not in a rush. I already own a charcoal sparkle, I just really want the aqua as well. Thanks
Smoked Chrome and Harvest Orange are my current favorites.
Harvest Orange is stunning too. That’s right up there with Snowy Night for me. It’ll probably come down to what’s available when I’m ready.
