the pickguard on my SRS in my profile pic is a black sparkle. It looks just plain black until it gets into a good light then it glitters - I dig it. The guy that does these has hundreds of options and is super easy to work with and he is quick to respond if you have questions.
+1 on the ebony. It makes my maple board sound warm. So fun!
I just learned this lesson. Went to the EB FAQ section and gave a full set up to their specs and BAM! It played and sounds like a Ray

Agree. I've got a black/maple/chrome from that line. Unfortunately, the swamp ash shortage hit soon thereafter. Thus, you've got 'select hardwood' bodies which likely have poor grain appearance (not commenting on sound, as I would be uneducated). With seemingly inferior body woods, EBMM likely made the decision to cover most of them up with non-translucent finishes and so we end up with the current color choices, none of which inspire me to purchase another EBMM. Regardless of body wood, I feel EBMM should at minimum offer the original EB colors of black, natural, white, and inca silver.
I can completely understand if you don’t like the current finish options.
But your statements that use likely and seemingly have no merit . Also , not everyone prefers ash. Just because there is a shortage does not make it superior. I prefer alder and have sold off every ash bass I’ve owned because I don’t like the super scooped tone it produces. I would never say alder is superior even if happens to be in short supply . Some people prefer translucent finishes with fancy grain.
I happen to prefer sparkle!! The more flakes the better for me. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to start saying my preference is likely or seemingly superior.
The latest batch is Specials have been much lighter than the 1st run.
I remember this same kind of nonsense talk about the USA SUB line of basses.

A couple of years ago; the specs now say "select hardwood". So they might use ash sometimes but they have covered themselves so they can use poplar and alder

Don't know why, but poplar and basswood bother me. In my mind (and that's just my hopinion), they're wood for furniture, not for musical instruments.
My SRS5H has been manifactured on february 4th, 2020. I can see 2 pieces under the finish, but probably they aren't ash.

I like alder too.
How can you tell what wood is in your Special when there's a solid finish?
If it sounds good and doesn’t weigh too much , I’m satisfied !!
My ears and years of prior experience with too many basses to count lead me to believe mine is alder . Can I prove it? Not unless I call Ernie Ball and they confirm it.
When un plugged my special sounds and feels exactly like an alder G&L I had. They both have a certain resonance when unplugged.
I could be wrong, but I don't think mine is ash either.
I don't think I've played any poplar basses to compare.

The description at the top says Ash, but then if you scroll down and look at the Tech Specs it says Select Hardwoods. I think they just never updated the headline for the change.
Im guessing they use ash on clear and bursts, otherwise not. My tectonic is probably alder. I tried changing the strap buttons for Dunlop locks but I couldn’t get the slightly larger screw all the way in without using a drill. I didnt want to do that so I put the originals back on. That wood is extremely hard.

I could be wrong, but aren't the SLO Specials closer to a jazz style neck? I had one for a bit, it was the December 2020 BFR which was a passive SLO Special Stingray. The neck on it felt great and I regret getting rid of it.
