I could be wrong, but aren't the SLO Specials closer to a jazz style neck? I had one for a bit, it was the December 2020 BFR which was a passive SLO Special Stingray. The neck on it felt great and I regret getting rid of it.

I don't think they have any currently for sale from their store but I recall seeing some for sale in the vault in 2020 or maybe early 2021. Aside from the BFR that I mentioned before, they have done limited releases with the SLO Special neck. The last ones I remember were black and there was another in a finish called orange crush.

Yes SLO necks are closer to a jazz. I just emailed EB about buying a neck last week and was told they aren't selling them at this time.

Has anyone put a detuner on their Stingray Special? If so, which one did you use?

Also, has anyone ever gotten a jazz bass sized neck from EBMM?

Detuner for StingRay Special would be Hipshot, model BT13 Bass Xtender (SKU: 21380B, that means Clover Key Shape, Black color and E string position). I contacted them by email, and they confirmed it to me. Not to be confused, when You choose it at their web site, the picture will still show the Y key shape, but choosing the Clover, will change the SKU number.

Regarding a Jazz size neck on a Stingray, the previous answers were correct...that is a SLO Special model which has a USA Sterling neck (very similar to a jazz size). It's hard to found a piece on the market these days, so choosing a USA Sterling would be a reasonable choice (I'm also considering doing it).

I'd love to have a musicman sterling, but are they even made anymore? Website shows two of them, both say color discontinued with no alternative.

Jesus, they make it confusing, with the EBMM Sterling and the other whole line of Sterling basses, neither of which are similar.

No argument. I absolutely love the Stingrays I've owned as well as every other MM bass I've played/tried. I think they make GREAT instruments.

But naming is definitely a weak point.

From what I understand, they have not produced any EBMM Sterling's for a while, maybe not since 2020, because of limitations on their ability to produce as many instruments due to covid. It seems they have mainly just focused on the products that sell the most, so guitars, Stingrays, and Bongos. I recall last year around August or September that they had said that they wouldn't be building any more Stingrays until 2022. Hopefully they will make an announcement sooner than later about what's coming for this year.

The Special HH sounds great through my Mesa TT800 as well so I have no doubt it would sound just as good through a Walkabout or WD800. Lots of good choices out there.

Another +1 on the Mesa / MM combo. I have a Mesa TT 800 and play a MM Special through it. Sounds wonderful, especially through the Boogie channel which imparts a nice bit of warmth to the tone.

My StingRay neck is too wide and after dipping my toes into Sterling/SLO desires versus cost/cosmetics I'm just gonna have my 2004 StingRay neck shaved down to the SLO/Sterling width. The problem is the finished headstock, going to see how well they can sand without making it look too hacky.

It's not my kind of colour as I prefer brighter colours. If I was someone that liked black instruments I'd be down for that one. Black just isn't exciting to me. That one just seems like a darker version of the smoked chrome finish.

Agreed but not heavy flake.
Just a metallic finish with the black burst.

I prefer the more … traditional (?)… bursts. In fact, all of my basses are some kind of traditional bursts - honeyburst, cherryburst, violinburst, or the classic three-tone sunburst.

But there’s something about that subtle blackburst and subtle metallic flake finish that I kinda like.

Small update on string journey. I changed the cobalt rounds to DR Sun Beams pretty quickly. The cobalt sounded good but I wanted a little lighter B. Sun Beams sounded awesome for the first 2 weeks but I'm not into them as an much as they have broken in. Still sound good but I'm going to try some Hi Beams and Pure Blues and see which one wins out. I have a barely used set of Pure Blues that were on an Ibanez 5 string. Going to try and see if they will go on the Stingray, not sure due to them being cut for a very different tuning key placement. If it fails I'll put on the Hi Beams

I know I had mentioned previously that i had put a set of stringjoys on it and was pretty happy with it. They are due to be changed out, so I'm going to put slinkys on it again, for comparison. I'm might do another stringjoy set after that (I'm a bit of a sucker for legit small businesses), I haven't decided yet.

Sunbeams are my go to brand, and the only strings so far Ive had on my Special. Ill be curious to see how they compare to Pure Blues.

I run PBs currently on my Special 5H. To start, I love PBs and they are my go-to round on all my basses. The PBs definitely have more going on in the mids than Slinkies which I really like. The tone is very bouncy and, IMO, well balanced. Good high end clarity without being too thin or weak sounding, and the lower strings have some nice growl and thickness without being boomy. Overall, the sound like PBs on a Special

Although not a Ray, but I needed to add 4 to the quiver, so I picked this little gem up from another TBr and promptly installed a set of Pure Blues and am VERY happy. Love Sterlings, and Rays!
