Wishing it were sub 8.5 lbs is my ONLY reservation… I read the Stringray Specials are pretty light but not sure where this one falls on the weight spectrum for these basses.
From my experience , the ash / ebony models at that weight is about right. Factor in the thicker sparkle finish and the extra binding and blocks probably are adding a few ounces . Still coming in at under 9lbs is good.Thanks for throwing GAS on a lit fire may just do it.

My 5 string Special is 8.9 lbs
Oh, I do need it - and would need it even more if it was an HH. But now’s not the time. We’ve had a bunch of big expenses recently and have a really big one coming up, so bigger toy purchases are on hold for a while.Seen this new Vault offering? How can you not need this one?
But don’t be surprised if I post a relatively inexpensive toy sometime soon….

Does any 5H owners use the middle position (faux single coil)? I use series and parallel all the time but can't get a solid tone out of the middle position. Just sounds a bit too thin for me
I actually do use that middle sound quite a lot on my 5H. I probably use the series one the least to be honest. I find the middle position cuts through nicely in a mix.
Update re middle position- I found maxing out the mids and boosting the bass give it a great tone.
I usually set my bass and treble controls and leave them the way they are between position changes except for very small tweaks. I mostly use the mid control for tone changes between the positions.
So I started playing around with pickup height with my Stingray Special 5 HH. Originally I had it set to the recommended specs on the Ernie Ball Music Man site like this
If you have a single pickup bass set the pickup height to 6/32" from the plastic pickup cover to the bottom of the G string. Adjust the bass side of the pickup to be parallel with the pickguard.
If you have a dual pickup bass set the bridge pickup to the specs above. Follow the same procedure for the neck pickup except set that to 8/32".
With this setting I was finding the neck pickup is quieter then the bridge pickup and especially with position 3.
So today I decided to match the volume with the neck and bridge pickup by ear. I left the bridge pickup alone. This turned out to be a hair under 7/32 for the neck pickup still keeping it parallel with the pickguard. Now I get a much more even volume switching between neck and bridge and the middle position 3 sounds so much better. In fact 2 through 5 all sound so much better. I also get no wobble sounds when fretting past the 12th fret so tuning is still good. I love my bass even more now.

What settings do you use most frequently? I occasionally use all of them but I have been using 2 (outers) a majority of the time. I like that the HH can be a traditional Stingray, but it doesn’t have to be.
