EBMM StingRay Special Club

Hi SR fans... looking for clips of a Ray in a jazz/fusion setting. Mostly interested in the 'Jaco' bridge cliche w/ tone rolled off vibe but open to listen to anything really. Not finding many examples.

I love the looks of a Ray but not really sold on the sound yet. Maybe my ears need checked but they often sound too scooped for my tastes but you never know how someone has their pre or amp set. Thanks!

You won't get a Jaco tone out of any Stingray IMHO. Even the ones that do have true single coil on the bridge side (older HS models) don't sound like a jazz bass bridge pickup.

You can get in that territory by rolling off the treble and boosting mids but it still sounds like a Stingray

That's ok, I figured as much. I'm still on the hunt for a ray tone in that ballpark -- bridge, rolled off. What's it sound like? Curiosity more than anything really. Have seen many rays in a jazz setting and honestly, getting tired of Fenders and thought I would explore other options.

How familiar are you with the StingRay Special? I've said this before, but for me the Special doesn't have what I consider the annoying zinginess of the previous three-band StingRays. I'm not sure how Jacoesque it is, but I think the Special is quite versatile.

Totally agree. I’m a fan of a soloed bridge pickup on a J. My Special doesn’t sound quite like that—to my ears it doesn’t have the high mids the J single coil gives you—but I do roll with it with the mids boosted and the treble rolled all the way off. Let’s say it sounds similar (not same) to that sound. But with a more round, warm bottom end. And that nice signature special sauce the 18v preamp puts out.

Yeah especially in series or faux single coil mode. I think it's harder to get that sound in parallel.

Of course that only applies to the 5H models.

Yes, that 'zinginess' along with the typical parallel sound is usually a 180° of what I'm after.

Thanks all, good stuff. Lots to think about...

For a more Jaco sounding bridge pickup and still in EBMM world you could go with the Bongo. Bongo has such a good bridge pickup sound for fusion.

As usual I regret selling my Bongo but I'm now proudly down to one bass (Stingray Special 5H) and want to stay that way for awhile.

I just practice a lot more with only one bass instead of tone chasing!

You can check out Gabriel Severn YouTube channel for a lot of Bongo and Stingray playing in a more fusion style.

Has anyone seen several Frost pearl Green SRSpecials in person? Have one on order and in anticipation ive been checking out some different images and whatnot online and im starting to get a bit nervous about the consistancy of the finish as some look to be like the image on the official site- A dark green fading into a lighter green gradient towars the center, then some others which look like its basically greenburst where its black paint around the border. Is this just a lighting thing or is it really this hit and miss?! Like if its not lighting they are literally loading the airbrush with black instead of green lol, seems like a pretty major oversight. Im really not going to be too thrilled if i open the case to a black border burst.

My Frost Pearl Green Special 5H looks like the middle one, but I would been happy with any one of the three finishes shown here.

Mine is the only one I’ve ever seen up close and personal….

Here is a quick and dirty pick of my Frost Pearl Green Stingray Special that I’ve had for a couple of months now. View attachment 5222330
As one can see, many be seems to be more faded into the top at both horns and barely into the top near the tail, or bridge end of the bass.
Unless I’m not seeing too well (I just got up, honestly, coffee is making!:roflmao:), my bass looks a little different from the 3 other Frost Pearl Green Special shown earlier.

Which is fine. I totally love this Stingray Special!
Yours looks different because of the custom knees hands and shorts pickguard . :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:
