From a purely aesthetic POV, I especially liked the white pearl blocks that match the white pearl pickguard. Also from a purely aesthetic perspective, I love how the blocks contrast with the ebony fretboard.

But I get that the impact on tone plays a bigger part in a personal buy decision

I hear you. I was a hard-core burst fan (well, still am, huge as a matter of fact :D) but I've been warming up to them. And, since getting my metallic Candy Red Big Al a few months ago, I've actually been able to picture a true sparkle or metal flake (G&L'a metal flake finishes are just incredible!) making its way into my collection.

Not for a while yet, though. Not because I'm not ready for a sparkle, but because I've bought three basses in the past year and can't justify another one any time soon.

I never thought I'd like sparkle until I saw the Aqua Sparkle in person.

After action report from the ground.

String my 5H with SIT POWER STEELS and because I have my relief set to .10" and low action Running through my Helix Stomp doing a parallel processed signal I was struggling with 4 KHz being ice pickey.

This is consistent with the videos recently posted comparing 2 band vs 3 band stingray preamps that have a massive spike at around 4k. I used a parametric EQ block to notch 4 KHz and compensated boosting with the treble knob and got a growly grindy sound that sounded massive with dropped D guitars.

WHO DAT!?!? .... NAWLINS IN DA HOUSE!!!! Im a New Orleans Creole so I saw this and thoughts of Mardi Gras, gumbo and beignets came to mind. :smug::hyper:

They are rather stiff, aren't they!

But from years of working on analog consoles and servicing hundreds of pots, faders, and switches, my sincere advice is to try and get used to the pots the way they are, if at all possible.

There is a solution that will lessen the stiffness of the pots. Use ONLY....ONLY....ONLY...Caig DeOxit and the version that I show in the pic I've included.....And I mean "ONLY".....(and surprise....it's ain't cheap!....:D). It basically cleans out the OEM lube and treatment inside the pot and replaces it with the ingredients in the DeOxit. This is good stuff....

However, I advise against using any such cleaner on a working pot. This is a temporary solution and your pot doesn't seems to be scratchy and/or dirty-sounding, does it? Once you use even this good stuff on a pot, the pot develops an appetite for the stuff and you'll have to re-apply it to the pot every so often.

I agree that it's really stiff. I recently did an outdoor porch gig with my Stingray Special where the temps in the evening were in the low 50s. Brrrr, ya'll! However, we were dressed for it and did fine. But man, those pots were really stiff that night!

Still, my advice on attempting to treat the pot with anything until its functionality is compromised. And even then, I'll use the D5 until I can get a proper replacement (from Music Man, of course!....:D).

There's your options and not bad ones either way, I'll concede. Good luck!

Thanks! I think I'll go the super cautious route and just get used to it. I figured there might be a problem with mine, especially comparing to my older ray and my yamaha bb. But if this is "special normal", then I can work with that!

If it operates smoothly, but stiff and there’s no crackling or noise, then you are fine.

And yes, my Special’s pots are stiffer to operate than than the controls on either of my Mike Lulls, or even my rescue bass, my Peavey T40. Which is 43 years old, but the pots are clean!….

Anyone here have a Bongo single H and have compared to their Special?

Both neo pickups in the same spot, but supposedly the pickups and pres are voiced differently.

Mostly just curious how similar they sound. Video clips make the Bongo H sound a little brighter to me but I've never played a single H Bongo.
