My Big Al 5H and Bongo 5HH have the beveled edge pickup(s), which is a good design. My Stingray Special 5HH has the new two-lump design and it does not bother me at all. Like Element Zero, my thumb nestles between the lumps. I only place my thumb on the pickup when playing the B string, though.

Gorgeous. Though I’m always curious… does the bevel on the pickups bother you? I 100% could not get along with those. I remember back when I worked at GC (‘04-14) and at some point we started getting all these Stingrays and Sterlings with these weird beveled pickups. One of my really close friends and coworkers had a late 90’s 5er and I was absolutely in love with it. With dreams of owning a “new” stingray someday, I was actually mad that they changed them lol.

Fast forward to now since I’m MUCH more proficient with a pick I could get along pretty well and come to terms with the bevel.

It’s either or for me, I tend to not anchor a ton.

I only anchor on the pickup if I’m plucking the B and E strings, which is where I live most of the time lol. Glad to hear it doesn’t seem to bug people. I assume most people aren’t bothered by the dual screws either.

@lm183902 honestly the old school design on my ‘00 Stingray vs the new Special pickup design isn’t a big deal. It still allows me to anchor when I want. Different feeling for sure. But my thumb fits perfectly in between the screws and rests nicely in front of the “front” screw.

Definitely not the biggest deal, and doesn't really impact my playing, but it's something that takes me a little time to get comfortable with when I get a new bass of a different design than I'm used to. I just loved the old design and thought it was perfect (probably a bit of nostalgia for my first nice bass) - not really sure why they changed it.

How did you get the matching headstock on your Special? Custom order from the shop? I was really hoping for that on the production models.

I might have asked this before, but is the fretboard, ebony? Or just a very dark rosewood? Either way, it looks great on that bass.

And a purple and leopard print stool? It's as "you" as your basses are!

It’s a nice dark chocolate rosewood .
My first one had it and I asked for it on my 2nd one as well.

It‘s what I‘m doing at the moment and I really enjoy them! Too bad the 5-string set doesn’t come in 40-125. I‘d love that!
