You are right. It’s a long shot. A very long shot.
Twice over the many years, I’ve lost a piece from a tuning machine head, or simply, tuner.
In both cases, I wound up buying a replacement tuner. My searches were coming up empty and I finally had to get it done and move on.
Good luck anyway….
I got a quick response at least (24 hours), EBMM doesn't stock any spare parts, they buy the tuners whole from Schaller. so I COULD continue the hunt by reaching out to Schaller or just order the dang tuner and get on with my life.You are right. It’s a long shot. A very long shot.

In searching for the tuner screw I found 3 posts on TalkBass about broken G string tuners binding when restringing. wonder if the screw on the g string backs itself out and since its on the lower side of the headstock falls out and disappears.
I think some locktite may be in order, the main gear screw has it I noticed when taking the tuner apart, but the peghead to worm gear does not.

I did order a new tuner so I can play this thing. Ernie Ball directed me to Schaller and the owner of Schaller responded and asked for pictures to investigate
The other screw holding the main tuner gear has thread lock. The long screw from the peghead attaching the worm gear does not. The screw head faces the floor. There may be an issue with these screws backing out and falling out when tuning.
I’m gonna thread lock this screw on the new tuner when it comes in to be safe.
And the plot thickens. Schaller says they don’t actually manufacture the lightweight tuners for Specials after I sent them a few pictures and that’s probably why there’s a problem with themI did order a new tuner so I can play this thing. Many here rave about their CS but my experience was more like yours so far

However I am VERY impressed that the owner of Schaller personally responded and wanted to investigate if there was an issue with screws coming loose in their tuners.
That's a good point, Groovy. At least the Schaller guy stepped up and took some responsibility.
Mmm. Yes. That right there. Especially with the black hardware. Perfection.
Does anyone with the black hardware notice a discoloration (turning grayish and the glossy finish turning flat in areas) especially on the tuning keys from fingers after some use. I had a recent Sterling Ray 34 with black hardware and hardware actually came discolored as described above. Hopefully EB has better quality black hardware but I have seen photos on this forum of Stingray Specials with black hardware where it appears to have this exact issue, however not seeing these first hand and only from photos it's hard for me to determine if I'd ever opt for black hardware on a Special. I've been very happy with the standard chrome finish tuners or whatever the alloy is, they all look like brand new even after 6 years. Some of the finishes would look great with black hardware but not at the expense of eventual blotchiness or discoloration, thus my question.
Great collection! It's cool that you've selected and kept basses that are unusual but also (I suspect) have significant tonal differences to one another. Have you compared and contrasted the new MoonBeam with the white one? (Can't think of the name of the white one right now.) Those two are the only ones that seem to have similar features. I also thought your Fuego was gorgeous, but I can see why you did what you did with it!
Both of the HH basses without pickguards are super light and super resistant . They are also both quite snappy.
I installed some new Labella low tension flats of the Crescendo BFR HH ( white sparkle). I was never
satisfied with the B string in that bass before. I had tried rounds and cobalt flats . But those labella flats have done wonders for that. I’m still undecided on the G string but I suspect that as those strings break in and mellow out, things will improve. Those strings are also still doing that new string stretchy dance of being in tune then suddenly out . ( So annoying ).
The MoonBeam is keeping stock rounds . If it ain’t broke don’t fix it !!

Definitely, having rounds on one and flats on the other will differentiate those two from each other.
I think so. And the Slinky cobalt flats fall somewhere in between the Labella’s and the Slinky Rounds on the Amethyst Sparkle .
The TI flats on my Fretless are a perfect match .

No discoloration here, mine is from 2019
As with all black hardware there is some wear on tuning pegs where coating is coming off where strings rub against. It is barely noticable though
Oh yes it did!!! Very nice combo . Classic and classy!! I’ve always loved the tuxedo look .
