People sleep on the HH models. If you spend some quality time with one , and get over the ā€œ neck pickup is in the way of my slapping ā€œ mindset, youā€™ll find out what they can really do.

I have small female short fingers hands so it doesnā€™t bother me. I can see how it would be a not so great fit for large hands. Often times it can be a matter of adjusting .
So Im not saying it can work for everyone.

Ha ha!!! You're incorrigible!!! But she's a beauty, for sure! (And I'm no better. I have way more basses than I need, but whenever something hits my "hot button"... ) Well you folks all know how THAT goes!! :roflmao:

I tried really hard not to want this bass. But I realized that I liked and wanted it more than some other basses that are on my rack.

Iā€™m going to keep one four string and one short scale . They just happen to be the same bass. Iā€™m keeping everyone of my StingRay5 Specials . And Iā€™m keeping my Sandberg.

But I honestly want even looking when this crossed my path . I know a good deal when I see one. And Im no fool. This has happened to me before with my Fretless and my Short Scale active .

I have nothing negative to say about them, except that I like my Specials better. I consider my Short Scale StingRay to be a Special as well. ;)
My reason for having the Smoothie was to get that Bernard Edwards style off playing and sound. For that I need a 4 string with a fast neck, light weight, and that StingRay bounce. There is more than one way to skin a cat, or achieve the same goal. I play much cleaner and faster on the short scale. It has the active eq which gets the old 2band vibe (even though it is 3 band.). The short scale achieves the same roundness and added warmth that the old smoothie pick up does, but with a better G string response. Not to mention the body size is a much better fit for me than the slab body.

Agree 100%. There is just so much versatility in an HH Special.

I hear a difference . With the same strings . Same goes for ebony. Iā€™ve had them all. Maple is my first choice , followed by rosewood.

Ebony has the most piano like sustain and note clarity to my ears. The trebles especially. Think grand piano with sustain pedal.

Rosewood to me has emphasizes the lows and mids. The trebles are there but they are sweet and less pronounced.

Maple tends to have a great even tone . The notes are immediate and punchy . Very lively and snappy .

This is my experience . Ebony had me trying to mute notes . The necks also seemed more heavy and the basses Iā€™ve seen with Ebony have a few more ounces on them .

But we all know that the bass is the sum of all its parts .

I bought a set of shims from MM, took the neck off and tried the pink one. It helped a bit but then there was a bit of a ski slope happening and the notes were choking out above the 14th fret. Took the neck back off and went back to no shim. Slapped on a set of Elixirs and dinked around for a day and off they went. Tried some Super Slinkyā€™s (as Iā€™m thrilled with those on the fretted Stingray) and couldnā€™t take them off fast enough. Flop city. Weird. Put a new set of Regular Slinkyā€™s, Lowered the action down as far as it would go, have very little relief in the neck, and just decided to live with it. After playing it for QUITE a lot of hours at home, and a loud jam session playing 70ā€™s rock covers, I donā€™t really ā€œneedā€ it to be slammed.

Iā€™m in a very comfortable spot right now and am feeling blessed to own this magnificent bit of wood metal and plastic.
