EBMM StingRay Special Club

Definitely, to each his own. I have two 4H Specials with flats, and I find the tone is pretty girthy if you play nearer the neck. That's especially true of the 4H with a rosewood fretboard. I've played it in my Motown band and it works fine.

Agreed. The stingray pickup sounds nothing like a jazz bass bridge pickup. It can get very very close, or in some cases even better and more smooth (because of the Eq) than a P Bass, especially with flats, of course. You don’t even have to play that close to the neck, maybe just barely past the pickup before it starts to get much deeper. I tend to play my stingray just over the top edge of the pick up.
My Amethyst Sparkle 5H Custom wears flats and it’s the one I use for old school Motown , 70’s Soul , as well as Disco . The rosewood/ flats/ and playing technique all make a big difference.

Sounds very different from my maple / rounds StingRays.

I brought the Special home today! Same exact one I played a week and a half ago! It’s everything that I’d hoped, and sounds epic through the GK Legacy. Glad I got the HH, because it is so versatile and learning the different tones/configurations made my night!

Thank you all for the advice and words of encouragement. :hyper:

Just picked up a Stingray Special 5H from Sweetwater. It’s an open box, supposedly passed their inspection. The base looks, feels and plays fantastic. The sound is growing on me, but I don’t have all the options. Currently, the bass only works in parallel mode. The series and series/filter settings don’t work at all.

Sweetwater is willing to exchange it for a new one, but I kinda just want to get this one fixed. I like the weight and I like how it feels. Dunno.
That’s terrible. Musicman produced a bass with bad electronics and Sweetwater missed it in the inspection. Par for the course

This might be heresy, but I'm considering a pickup/preamp swap on my 5H special. To my ears, the pickup/pre lack *something* in clarity/top end air. It seems high-mid and kind of brash to me, but it plays like an absolute dream. Has anyone else done this and been happy with the results? I'm even considering adding a jazz neck pickup. (Please save the comments on modding an expensive instrument - they're not that expensive, and I understand the impact on resale what I'm considering will have)

What about trying a string type change? What strings are you using on it now?

Alternatively, if you are set on the pickup/preamp swap, talk to the guys at Nordstrand. 5 String Music Man Bass Pickups

Are you an at home player mostly solo without mix or drum machine?
What Amp/cab or headphone setup
Do you have SR5 Special?

I'm a full-time performing and session player. Various monitoring setups, from IEMs to Aguilar DB751 and GR 410. Yes, my SR5 is the special.

Nice to know so under those circumstances if not satisfied with pre or pickup a change may help
I have read a few places Neo pickups to some lack the air/openess of Alnico
Mainly from Dingwall owners who swap Alnico for Neo that was srandard
