EBMM StingRay Special Club

I'm a very recent convert to the Stingray Special. I briefly owned a regular Stingray a couple of years ago but didn't reallt gel with it. I find the Special to be much more usable in terms of sounds and playability. I liked my first one, Dropped Copper with maple fingerboard, so much that I got a second, Candyman with an ebony board.

Both of them are strung with flats - GHS Precisions on the copper one, EB Cobalts on the red.

100% precisely how I felt and still feel about my Hot Honey 5H (the one in my profile pic).

So much so that I’ve sold or am about to sell all the other basses I own.

Candyman is such a great finish. What's your thoughts on the fingerboard difference? I find ebony has some extra highs and faster attack, both of which I dig. It's subtle though

I'm pretty sure that most/all the difference in sound between the two of them is due to the (stainless vs cobalt) strings rather than the fingerboard material. Similarly I suspect the slightest adjustment of the preamp would have more impact than the maple vs ebony.

I'm now wondering if I could tell which is which by feel when blindfolded. Maybe?

Looks great! I was also confused by that, which is why I stumbled in here. (There is a Sterling thread, a Bongo thread, and a Special thread, but I couldn't find a basic stingray one)

Yeah it's very subtle for sure. I briefly had a maple 5HH and ebony 5H at the same time and they sounded almost exactly the same (with bridge pickup only in parallel). I could hear the subtle differences just playing by myself but nothing I could distinguish in the mix. I mostly hear it when slapping actually.

I still prefer ebony just for looks!

Just a warning that Club is loaded with '2 banders' whom assert 2 band Stingray is only true Stingray and hold EBMM and 3 band pre in disdain both pre Special and Special

Why I deleted from my watched threads hopefully you will get positive feedback on that Great looking and 'Stingray Sounding' Bass all three are excellent Basses IMO

Why I deleted from my watched threads hopefully you will get positive feedback on that Great looking and 'Stingray Sounding' Bass all three are excellent Basses IMO

A little elitism, eh? Well, I think both of Rays are technically 2 band EQs anyway. lol

FWIW, All my Stingrays, including my Special, are three-band 5 strings and I've always felt welcomed here. Yes, the two-banders are pretty vocal, but not actually obnoxious. Every has their opinions and that's cool here.

Now that I think about it, my Stingrays have also been all HH models. I guess I'm about as much an outlier as you can get in a Stingray club!

Same here, 5H and 5HH and this has been an excellent club… very friendly and very knowledgeable!

Huh. I guess I never noticed that anti-3-band bias over there. Personally, I greatly prefer 2-bands and Specials to the old 3-bands, so I may have inadvertently contributed to this. If so, I'm sorry. I'm happy for anyone who likes the 3-bands; I'm just glad there are other options now. (I realize that the options are fewer or nonexistent now for players who want to buy a new EBMM 3-band.)

Yes Stingray Special Club but I was referring to Musicman Stingray Club

Yes we all have opinons based on personal taste, bias and perceptions but assertions which are many in 'other' Club I find obnoxious

IE: I prefer Chocolate Ice Cream over Strawberry is an opinion

Chocolate ice cream 'smokes' Strawberry which taste terrible: is an assertion

I'm with you, I prefer the Specials and 2 bands as well.

But then I hear people sound phenomenal on the pre special 3 band too. It just never was the one for me.
