There's cause for concern, but not from you. Authorities and the CDC are taking swift action to put systems in place. You can go about your life as usual. And it's not "the US health care system." The CDC is made up of engineers, entomologists, epidemiologists, biologists, physicians,veterinarians, behaviorial scientists, Nurses, medical technologists, economists, Public Health Advisors, health communicators, toxicologists, chemists, computer scientists, and statisticians.

The Washington Post article was a delight to read! We really have nothing to worry about, as Nigeria has successfully contained Ebola!

This is wonderful news indeed.

I would like to shake the hands (figuratively speaking, of course!) of all the Nigerian Health workers that accomplished it.

I confess, I didn't read the CDC report; way too wordy. But I was impressed with their organization structure chart!

The fact that these outbreaks were contained and the low number of people infected are what keep me from worrying. But again we all have different reactions and attitudes to risk and I respect your rights to panic and post clips with apocalyptic music, racist rambling by a psychotic conspiracist (where do you find nutjobs like this Bernhardt character?) and shrugging starlet gifs. They really move the dialogue forward. Though I do note that one of the links contradicts the other ones entirely, though it does not mean it is a more viable source.

Not sure what the MDS link is for, unless it's just a randomly added other disease to increase unease and hysteria. Why not just list every other disease around?

You know what scares me more? The amount of people killed annually and completely needlessly by diseases we had under control because they have been whipped into an illogical and entirely unfounded mistrust in vaccines due to the inability to understand science and statistics, and the people who spread this kind of information in spite of it being entirely discredited and shown to be based on 1 faulty and self-serving tiny study that has never been reproduced, resulting in the doctor being struck off and moving to the US to find enough gullible people who are immune to facts to continue to spread the lies.

As easy as it is to blame the request not to take pictures on a conspiracy, I can understand the motivation. People panic when they see images like this, and panic leads to the kind of civil unrest that makes these situations infinitely worse, and exacerbates the problem itself.

Sometimes I think some of you want this to become the worst case scenario. Anyway, I'm going to bow out for a while, I don't feel like debating how to perceive news stories and each development in in the course of this outbreak.

I do reserve the right to come back and say I told you so, though. On the other hand, If this does become the 'big one' that wipes out a large fraction of the world's population, I promise I will come back and admit I was wrong, too, if I'm still here.

One parting shot: if these are the ends of days, I'd rather spend them enjoying my life than trembling at every emotionally charged news bulletin and 24 hour a day TV news feed. Not putting my head in the sand either.

is a commonly held notion by the folks who are against air travel restrictions on West African travellers.

They rationalize that the needs of one (Ebola infected person) somehow outweighs the needs of safety for the rest of the (unaffected) world.

This logic escapes me. But I think that many people share the idea.

It doesn't have to be a person coming to your country.

It only has to be an infected person getting onto an airplane that goes to any international airport.

Yes, I know it isn't an airborne infection, yet, but cough up some sputum on an armrest or bathroom faucet handle and see where she ends up.

Why anyone would think permitting the enemy (by enemy I mean the virus, not the people) into their uninflected area is OK. This is simply arrogant foolishness. They use Quarantine for a reason, but on a big scale, they seem to forget that basic principle.
