Ebola Comes To USA

I'm in healthcare...in a hospital on the "frontlines"
I'm not worried yet...but I feel that it's necessary to stay informed
When there are random cases popping up all over the country, I'll start to get concerned

If that happens, it'll be TOO LATE to be concerned, it'll be time to kiss your a$$ goodbye. That is exactly SkyChief's point we need to take action NOW before those random cases start popping up.

There are things that are not being considered here (I'll admit that I haven't read the whole thread) but THIS IS SPREAD BY CONTACT WITH BODY FLUIDS...read that again and ask yourselves how many times each of you has gotten HIV or Hep C from standing within arms reach of a person infected.

Another thing that isn't being considered is the the incubation time and how quickly it kills

For example, HIV tends to fly "under the radar" and show signs of infection months after contracting the disease...leaving as much as six times the number of months to infect and potentially kill an Ebola patient...that usually means that it will "burn itself out" quickly.

Now, IF and it's a HUGE if, this virus mutate (which it's only done once or twice since it's discovery) to become airborne...THEN it could have a HUGE impact on the human race as a whole

Hospitals are making sure that staff is as educated as possible and also as prepared as possible for treating patients with this disease.

It's my understanding that the CDC was concerned that this man had infected other individuals that he'd come into contact with...have there been any cases as a result of that? Also, are there any reports of hospital workers that were infected from treating the patient???

That isn't necessarily so, and I point to smallpox as THE classic example. That was eradicated country by country without containment, it had a relatively high mortality rate but was eradicated through persistent efforts over the course of 80~ years. I don't suggest it was the best way to eliminate a disease, but it worked and it was worldwide. Here we aren't talking about a worldwide plague and, we should be working to keep it that way.

Yeah, well, here's another thing that isn't being considered, everything is not known about the virus, including how it spreads. The cameraman from US has no idea how he ended up with it.

This is inaccurate. Yes it is spread by bodily fluids, but it doesn't die easily like HIV does. It can stay active for days and days on things like door handles, where you can touch or interact with another persons sweat or saliva on a drinking fountain, whatever. HIV doesn't work that way. Actually I think HIV is only from contact with BLOOD.

Completely agree that everything is not known...however, it's possible that the cameraman contracted the disease in the normal way without being aware of it.

Hi...I'm not really sure I understand your point

The first thing I'd like to point out is that HIV is contracted by more than just BLOOD...I'm well aware that HIV doesn't work any other way except by exchange or contact with body fluids...but keep in mind the HYSTERIA that was caused when HIV first became the household word that it did when first hit the media.

To my knowledge, there is no substantial evidence that concludes exactly how long that ebola can survive on a surface but the experts on infectious disease centers encourage strict and proper hand washing to avoid the spread in that manner

Smallpox was eradicated with vaccination. I don't think we have a vaccination for Ebola yet. It is possible I missed that piece of information though.

I'm not sure who to believe, who really knows how it's spread, and who;'s to say it hasn't/can't mutate to a more easily spreadable version of itself.

I think in a situation with this much potential for devastation, we can error on the side of caution or even over-reaction. People should not be allowed into/back into this country until things are under control. If you are worried about getting back in, don't leave. That may be a little extreme, but I don't mind having some over the top restrictions in place if it keeps me and my family safe.

You compared HIV to Ebola. Ebola can be transmitted much easier than HIV. There is a lot more justification to worry about Ebola than HIV.
 
You're assuming that the Ebola patients in Texas came from Liberia.

They might have entered the U.S. anywhere along its 1200 mile long (Mexico) border.

It doesn't sound like you are informed enough to be making any commentary on this. The man flew from Liberia into the United States, not Mexico. You are simply adding meaningless, made-up jibber-jabber into the discussion.
