Eden EX112 neodymium speaker considerations

In Medieval times, the serfs worked in the fields from dusk till dawn. They got two breaks a day, morning and afternoon. Part of their payment was during those two breaks they were given pints and quarts of grog for replenishment. Sometimes it was hot and they would end up drinking too much Pints and Quarts. They would become rowdy and sometimes not even return to work. So the field boss would remind them... "Mind your P's and Q's, you dirty serfs!"

After coming out of the fields, only to be chained to a desk, nothing has changed, fellow serf!

I'm using that little tower of 110/112 w/BH550 tonite with the 4 pc semi-acoustic band. Cajon, acoustic guitar, violinist go thru the PA. In these restaurant gigs, I don't have to. I can carry the room with that little stack, using a 5 stringer and still have alot of power left if needed.

Last cab I bought to use with this band was a new GK CX210. Still had a boomy sound issue. Even using my fDeck HPF I couldn't shake the boom in the room. Decided to try a 110 for band practice. The 110 is a Ear Candy that I made an offer on and got a good price on. Didn't know EarCandy's bad past and only found that here on TB after I'd ordered. I started to email them asking for details of shipping ETA, etc. They were very quick to reply but when I tried to cancel, they said cab was already under construction, so I stuck with them. Prolly due to all my bothersome follow up emails, they shipped fairly quickly. Had to contact them recently as the cover is coming unglued at bottom of cab. She offered to reimburse me the cost of Gorilla Glue and said she does the covers and is embarrassed this happened. I re-glued it, cab still works fine.

Then added this Eden 112 which is already constructed so no waiting for that, it arrived very quick. I now get a very nice low-mid tone with still very good bass in these rooms with this band. I may order another EX112 soon to use two 112's. I'm quite surprised I can get away with a 110/112 but very happy I decided to try it. Smaller, lighter schlep factor, still pretty big loud sound. Started using my effects pedals again and they work nicely with these cabs too. peace, e.

I picked up a used EX112 today on a whim, thinking I'd like to have something lighter & smaller than my Markbass 2x10.
Well, they're the same weight, but at least the 1x12 is smaller.

However, I don't like its sound with overdrive, in comparison to the MB cab.

Maybe with a nice new neodymium speaker in there, it could be lighter & better...

add: What I don't like about the sound of OD on it is a sizzle I hear, maybe too much distortion.

add2: I'd like to be able to use it for guitar as well, which is what I've been doing with the Markbass 2x10 for over a year.

Didn't read every post but my first thinking just was, why not give a chance to a EVM 12L.

I use the Eminence Kappalite 3012LF in a similar-sized enclosure. It doesn't have a lot of top end on its own, but that probably translates into not much sizzle.

The Deltalite is theoretically another candidate, but it has a rising response through the upper midrange region and I'm not sure that would be a step in the right direction for you.

The Basslite 12 is another possibility, again strong upper mids, and more modest power handling than the other two.

If you want a solid low end, the Kappalite is hard to beat.

Interesting, I was doing a small gig last night with Bag End 12 / Kappalite 3012 LF and the sound was epic. The funny thing is that the low frequencies found places in the room nobody knew existed, yet around me and the band the cabinet was not as present. Still it could have peeled paint if I had cranked it up.

best drivers I have experienced was two Kappalite 3010LF in a Avatar cabinet
Stupid me returned it, because it was awful for guitar, even with the horn tweeter, but it was also about 45 lbs.
At the time I had a Markbass 2x10" that was only 30 lbs.

Ideally I should have kept the Avatar specifically for bass & the MB for guitar, but I rage quit on that day

Similar experience on my side. It's quite a hard way to challange versus room modes which obviously can't be deleted with a HPF.

As far as the boom in the room issues, I've found a a semi-parametric mid-range control solves it every time. It sounds like bass, but like tonight, it was around 500hz that was mucking things up. I just turn the midrange level down a tad and turn the frequency knob until the mess is gone. Well, and I always high pass at 40hz.

No boom in the room last nite. Didn't need the HPF either. Just the 110/112 cabs, Carvin Fretless 5er, couple pedals for some effects when needed and the BH550. That TC Electronics head has a different function of the knobs compared to my other micro amps. Just slight turn of the knobs can give you big changes. I had bit of a learning curve but I can get it dialed in very quick now. Couple folks took some vids and the bass was sounding very nice.

The bands' mix was very nice last nite, I was running the board, not the Cajon player as usual so that prolly helped. ;>) peace, e.
