Effects advice

Hi,

My first post! I've been playing a few years and I'm trying to work on my sound. I'm really into noisy stuff and have been trying to get the bass sound like Future of The Left.. the song 'Manchasm' is a good example:

I've got a Boss ODB3 and a Mark Bass iii, I play a fender prescision, but cannot get close enough.. does anyone have any advice? Should I get a compressor pedal to help with this kind of sound?

There are likely many paths to this tone. I would consider an MBD-1/2 by Damnation Audio. It’s been a while since I’ve played through one, but a Darkglass B3k is another likely suspect.

Welcome @PaulaX as @jbybj stated there are many ways to achieve this tone which is likely a combination of the players techniques, the bass more than one effect and possibly an amp and who knows what studio trickery. The trial and error path could be lengthy, frustrating and costly given the many types and variants that abound. I prefer taking a more direct approach and use tools that allow me to recreate tones or create my own. These days my primary distortion tools are the Source Audio Aftershock and[Invalid or Expired Link Removed] But I still cherish my collection of dirt boxes that I just cannot seem to part with and occasionally add an unusual choice to.

Thanks all! They are very entertaining - a really excellent band.

I've tried a fuzz pedal (an EHX deluxe) but it was really fizzy on top or dull when I rolled the tone off.. mmm.. I'll see if I can source any of your suggestions.. Cheers!

If you are running a clean, full-range amplification setup, you aren’t gonna get that sound, no matter what dirt pedal people recommend. Have you tried dialing the VLE back a little bit on your Little Mark III to remove the fizzy top-end? That will at least help. My honest recommendation is to get some sort of pre-amp that dirties up well, because it’s going to help out getting that sort of tone a lot more than sticking other dirt pedals in front of a clean, modern amp. Also, if you like what the VLE does, but don’t want it in your clean tone, a low pass filter that you can kick on and off will do the same thing (because it is the same thing).

Yes, the Rusty Box would kill in this application.

I can borrow an EHX bigg muff deluxe, that has a gate on it.. I'll have a go at that first.. certainly a cheaper way than getting a Rusty Box! fingers crossed..

Fuzz is what I hear.
But it’s a heavier gated/clipping fuzz, not a fuzz face type. And note not every fuzz is right for bass. But you can get that tone without too much trouble.

Not trying to sell it but take a look at the demos for the Tape Audio’s One Fuzz. It’s dead simple and I use it on bass often. It’s just got 2 controls, but one of which is compression is of the clipping diodes. You can adjust the “spitting” or “ripping” tone you hear there. Check it out. Not sure if there are dedicated bass demos but there are several that have bass.

Usually it's just comments on my van's proximity to the river, or my diet of government cheese

I really liked this band, and the previous band Mclusky.

Here's some more great bass tone...I suspect Ashdown amps were a big part of the sound.
