Effects-- what's your fave and why?

Phase shifter seems to be the one effect I return to the most. It's been a while since I've used an actual Phaser pedal because the Peavey Mace VT tube amp I always have within arms length sitting on a Peavey 215D cab has it built in. I also own the 4 button footswitch for the Mace VT head so I can also combine the normal and effect channels for more interesting results.

I absolutely loved the combination of drive into flanger into delay I got using a Pike Vulcan, Boss BF-3 and Boss DD-3T, so much so that I eventually had them rehoused into a single unit by Moose Electronics. I'm not sure it counts as one effect but I always run them together to get a nice Tool-esque tone that always feels musical and that I don't think I'd tire of.

For me, the added, yet subtle, flavour of 'overdrive' is probably the 'effect' I could not do without sonically (and which my amp, basses and fingers are not delivering on their own). And this, so far, would be my favourite way to get there:

I would guess there are others but I use Helix for all my verb and delay. So I guess HX One would be the smallest and cheapest of that route. And yes, the 500hz HPF is only for the feed to the verb, the dry signal is full range.

Have you ever looked at creating a model with Neural Amp Modeler? I've seen various pedals that people have created models for, and I'm sure you can co something similar with the Marshall time modulator.

Just one?? Yikes, that is tough. I would say, Atomic Bass Box, even though the owner is shifty. It' a great pre-amp, DI, Cabsim, with Compressor. Sounds killer... Or my Rusty Box.... MBD.... jeesh, I can't decide on just one. Like potato chips, or my kids. Not fair!!!

I generally dislike massive amounts of effects, so many of them are pointless... but I sure as hell love my BOSS CS-3. And you?

IE Nimbus is my guilty pleasure. I'm mostly an at-home in my living room player because I'm old so reverb is the best effect ever.

Comp and octaver. I'm currently rolling the empress bass comp and a 3leaf octabvre. The 3leaf is a pedal I'll likely never sell

I think of Compression, LPF/HPF, EQ, Tube Preamps/DI, and Cab Sim as utilities. Just as with Electricity, Gas, and Water being necessities in my home, I absolutely wouldn't want to be without these at home, in a session, or when on the road at a gig.

With that said, in the way of things I would consider to be a 'true' effect, unnecessary quality of life enhancements if you will, Delay is my absolute favorite by a large margin.

The short version is that NAM lets anyone model their gear so it can be used as a plugin in your DAW of choice. This page offers a better explanation of the process. It's similar to modeling your own gear with something like a Kemper unit, except NAM is free and open source.

Cool, thanks! Good to know. I wish I still had the MTMs I used to (on loan from a dear friend for far too long!) to do this. Given they were never reissued and originals seem to go for about $5K, I may not get the opportunity.

Those Big Sky's are amazing units. I have the Blue Sky v1 which I mainly use on my synths and it sounds fantastico.
