I am also looking for an OD/distortion pedal, and would love to hear some sound samples of an English Muff'n played with a bass

I played one today through a Standard Jazz... basically, in a word, it's WARM. Seriously, warm fat sound 'till next Tuesday. I found that I had to push the gain knob right up near full to get serious grind, but I liked the more subtly driven tone quite a bit. Also, cutting the mids a little seemed to do wonderful things. Plus, it's big and imposing-looking... Unfortunately, I had only a very, very short time to test it out, and it's two-hundred-something Canadian dollars, which is a heckuva lot of cash for me at the moment...

Okay... anyone out there with experience with an English Muff'n... this is probably an idiot question but *shamelessly raises his hand*
if you leave the pedal plugged in for a long period of time (not with the stompswitch turned on, just the main AC power...) will the tubes be continuously wearing out over that time? The handy EHX pink sheet didn't seem to have related advice.

What do you consider long periods of time? A few hours, 6? 7? No problem IMO, they'll need replacing after a few years. You shouldn't have a problem, but remember replacing tubes is considered regular maintainence. However, preamp tubes should last a while.strangemusic said:

BassGod, with regard to the tone... i might use the word "organic" to describe it? It sounds deep and full and shaggy through most of the gain range. I haven't been able to coax a *LOT* of variety from it (perhaps some more experimenting is in order), but I like what it does.

Sorry to revive this thread so long after it's journey into the night of Talk Bass, but I just got a new Muff'n and I have a question. I love it. It really does sound terrific. If anything, I take a little bit of bass <i>out</i> of the the signal.
Has anyone considered changing the tubes in it just to see what would happen? I know it has lower gain tubes, but I have some 12ax7s sitting around. Any idea if I will cause damage trying that?
I just can't stop experimenting with stuff...

It has a pair of 12AY7's. I believe it was designed for a 12AX7 into a 12AY7 or something like that.JJBluegrasser said:

I ordered my Muff'n yesterday, I love the BM I just bought, so, I'll have to do a little head to head when it gets here. Seems just the thing I needed though. Never would have found it without this thread.

Wow, just wow. For once an OD with a TRUE tonal range. I mean you can tweak the bejeezus out of it. From Big Muff tone and mellower, the three band EQ means you don't sacrifice any tone. This guy is like playing through a hot tube preamp. The fact it comes with the power adapter is a nice touch, though considering the price of the pedal I'm not surprised. I think my Big Muff is going back to GC. It almost gives me a tone like I am running a dry signal and an OD signal. Very cool you don't lose the fundamental.

Yep. I love mine too. I switched the tubes for some JJ/Teslas and it sounds even better. Although it sounded fabulous out of the box.

Never heard anything about the Womaniser on bass just it looks cool, dual tube, similar to the muff'n in terms of basic design, pretty cool packaging and features though. Hmm, plenty of thinking to do lol. I think I may just get the muff'n though, the valve drive isn't out yet and you can guarentee it'll cost a lot (even compared to the muff'n).

Well, for me, one thing is that the EH pedals are really works of simplicity, and pretty utilitarian in design. I'm a pretty utilitarian guy. To me, it sounds like there is not chip one in that box.
Switch breaks, pick one up at wherever. Pot breaks, pick one up at wherever. Not proprietary, it just works, plain and simple.
After my luck with this, I may just be ditching my Chorus for a EH chorus.
