EHX English Muff'n Uberthread

I run direct into the mixer at church via SABDDI playing a Spector Legend. I'm not satisfied with the tone and after listening to various EH pedal sound samples (Big Muff, Pi, double Muff, English muffin) have found that I like the tone from the English Muffin.

Anyone use this one in their chain?

There are a few threads here on this- one even has a sound sample. Perhaps if you used the search function you would find answers quicker.

Hey, I just scored an English Muff'n off ebay yesterday, and I was wondering if you could help me with your insights on preamp tube combos for this little guy.....I read your thread that you posted on 3/21(my B-day:eyebrow: ) and wondered if you got any answers to your questions, and hopefully this may help anyone else that wants to experiment with tubes on this pedal - I know you are the "KING OF MUFF", haha!

...anyway, I was wondering if I could get a grittier, harsher tone from using 12AX7's instead of 12AY7's...or maybe using them in combination with each other....as you can guess, I play a Ric, and like the tones of early Tool, and Faith No More - real gritty, with an airy, slicing top-end...

The "Spy-Driver" bass sample from their website(EH) does sound pretty nice though, but of course I can never leave well enough alone....even before I have the pedal:eek:

I just thought I'd ask the Muff-Master!:D

One of the primary reasons that I bought the English Muff'n is for the flexibiliy of tube-swapping. I put X's in my Muff'n and I like the results. My preference is for a farily heavy OD tone rather than a raging distortion, so I have the gain on the pedal set at about 40%. The combination of a higher gain tube with a lower gain setting on the pedal gives me a tone that I couldn't find with the stock Y tubes. It works for me, YMMV. With X tubes and the gain cranked up all the way, the thing is a raging monster.

Really??

...cause I just got mine today!:hyper: (I swore never to use that freakin' hyper guy:rolleyes: )

...and although I like the tube tone, I want a more gritty tone, and that description sounds pretty good to me!

I shall try the 12AX7s soon ....although I've heard miles about the JJ's, it seems like people prefer them for their softer attack...I want a nice round tone with a top-end chime when playing softly, but pure tube grind when digging in, with harsh harmonics.

I just nabbed one of these for real cheap. Couldn't be happier, it does everything I want a distortion pedal to do. My only dislike is that it seems to pull some of the punch out of my bass, but I'm going to be running all my effects through the loop on my DB680, and have it blended with 40% or so clean tone, so it will be sweet.

I'll get some clips up soon. :)

As with a lot of OD/ditortion/fuzz pedals, you need to boost the level on the pedal to really get the tone to cut through. Running it in a mixable loop might work pretty well to retain some of the tight punch of your clean tone. However, as with most dirt pedals, you might end up finding that it works better before the pre-amp.

For me, when I kick the Muff'n on, I'm trying to create a wall of overdriven bass tones and am generally not concerned with retaining a lot of punch. I want things to vibrate and grind, not necessarily get kicked in the gut.
