Envelope filter/follower addict support group

Twins, buts with different fashion sense. The Funkulator is definitely much cooler looking , with the wood sides and that VU meter. I mean, just oozes quality and class, like it's wearing a tailored tux. Not that the Octavium is cool looking, but you know.

Other than that, there is a slight difference in the way that the the touch knob responds - the Funkulator is more responsive in the lower settings, but at a certain point on the dial they even put (around the 2:00 mark).

But the bottom line is that both are super cool and sound incredible and for all practical purposes incredible. Both are also super rare and I'm pretty lucky to have come across them.

Im going to sell one of them of course, and someone already has dibs on the Funkulator.

But first, recordings.
These are very well designed, unique pedals. They'll only get rarer.

Man, you got that right. Super, super cool and very well done. Any time that you have something that is much more than the sum of it's parts and it sounds so frickin' good ... you know you got something special.

Allright allright allright!

I had a setback with my hand (infection came back with a vengeance), that and some work travel are my excuses for not getting these up sooner!

I have five recordings to add tonight - the Meathead, the Past FX px101, the Subdecay Prometheus, and Funkulator and the Octavarium.

All three done direct into Audacity on my Macbook directly thru an Audient iD14 USB interface with a Fodera YYS. No other effects or processing.

A few recording notes - I made a few more flubs than in the past on these, but I felt that it was important to keep them in so I could demonstrate how the pedals reacted. I also made it a point, especially on the Past FX, to show how these reacted when playing fast - I really like the way that it responds, and it's nice to compare.

I didn't bother with the LFO on the Prometheus - tbh I probably never will, but as you can see I dig the EF options. Also, it really, really shines behind an octave, fuzz, and waveform generator. I'll post some samples of that when I put my board back together (pending arrival of the Funky Puppy).

For the Funkulator and the Octavarium - I started with the EF side solo, then the octave/fuzz side solo, then combined. The EF side isn't set to be exactly where i would like it for stand alone EF, but rather my preferred tone for when the two sides are combined.

Also, for the Octavarium, I started with the controls on both the Funkulator and Octavarium set exactly the same (for a direct comparison), then about 30 seconds in on the Octavarium recording I back off on the "touch" control to about noon, which I think is a better sound.

Dig the E string response on both - absolutely no issues there!

I didn't really feel like messing with the knobs on this go round, so with the exception of the Octavarium as noted above, what I started with is what you get the entire recording.

I am still waiting on the Funky Puppy (ETA next Wednesday), and when that arrives I'll also pull the 3 Leaf GR 2 off my main board and do some samples of both. I'll also do some recordings of how the different EF's respond when paired with synthy options - namely octave, waveform generators, and fuzz. The top three IMO of those are the Prometheus, Xerograph Deluxe, and 3 Leaf Proton.
Same-zies with the Digitech BSW.

I'll also get some recordings posted of the filters with loops and fuzzes (Meathead, Wonderlove, GR 2, et al) as well as samples of EF's paired with the envelope phaser as well as stacked EF's and fuzzes. Fun times my bass playing brothers!!!

The Wahvelope is on 10 weeks + backorder, so it's gonna be awhile before I post that - but post it I will!!

Also, for housekeeping sake - I've been doing some duplicate posts in this thread - Synthy analog bass pedals that are designed to work together

But, since most of the content over there is relevant here, I'm no longer going to update both threads, just this one.

Also, please feel free to hmu with any questions - a lot of folks DM and start with some variation of "I'm so sorry to bother you but ...." Hogwash. It's not a bother at all, hmu with any questions, or better yet post them here so the whole group can benefit. I'm having a lot of fun doing this and it's really helping my hand rehab, but I also want this to be a reference for EF's.

And for that end, please feel free to post your stuff, or if you like you can send it to me and I'll host it - I expect this file share to be up a long time. My only ask is that you include your name or TB handle in the file name so that I can give you credit for the recording.

@moon-bass I'm interested on your Funky Puppy thoughts, both in general and how it compares to the original orange monsters...
Yeah man for sure! I fully plan on doing a full comparison, including some recordings. The Funky Puppy builder is also asking for my thoughts as well.

My Chunk pedals are fairly close in serial number so I think that would make them a good pair.

I did ask for a mod in the Funky Puppy - basically smoothing out the response on two of the knobs, so I don't expect quite an exact match with the controls, but I do expect them to be close, if not identical, in tone.

I've owned a few Meatball clones in the past and just never really got along with them. I ended up buying an Artisanal Effects Meathead and .. just wow. I absolutely love it. I don't remember any of the previous ones that I have owned sound nearly as good as this, I have to say that it knocked my socks off (and I wasn't even wearing socks!!)!

It's thick and juicy with a ton of booty! I'm gonna have fun with this tonight, and I'll see if I can get some recordings done this weekend. But hot damn, the response and the chewiness and the outright massive FUNK!

I'm thinking that I never really had a "real" Meatball clone before (maybe the closest is the 3 Leaf GR2, which has been my favorite for a long, long time, but that's not a clone, just "based on" from what I understand). I can see why people love them so much, as I am entirely digging this!

Great job Artisanal Effects - oh, and BTW, the owner/builder is a helluva nice guy, answered all of my questions quickly, and was a pleasure to deal with - and that's always a plus in my book!
I recently order an Artisanal Meathead, and he mentioned selling one less recently to "...a guy that had owned 29 different envelope filters over the years, and 'only' had 14 now." Sound familiar? You're right though, this pedal is sick.

Artisanal was out of cheese when I ordered, but I found a local builder who's working on one for me. Not much time to play these past few weeks, but every chance I've gotten has been experimenting with mixing the QTron+ and Meathead together.

I just counted and currently I have 13 different envelope filter pedals, several with multiples and this does not include envelope functions in multi effects or synth pedals like the C4, Bass Micro Synth, Mothership 2 and Future Impact that can function as a filter pedal. 5 of those are variations on EHX Bass Balls.

My current count is 16, plus two on the way, so 18 total. Not that I am opposed to a lot of filters, I do have this "thing" about just owning pedals to own pedals, and I don't like to have them sit on a shelf collecting dust, so I'll be putting a few more up on the block. But, it's going to be a tough task to figure out which ones!

Edit: Wait, I missed one existing and one on the way, so 17 and 20 total. That doesn't count ones that are built into digital amps .. just doesn't feel right to count them.

My Funky Puppy (clones of the Chunk Systems 00Funk and Brown Dog) came today and I've been spending the better part of the afternoon playing with it.

First things first, other than the "smoothness" mod (my request), the pedals sound and respond identically. He did a fantastic job with these, and I'm really happy.

In addition, it looks super cool. I chose the white faceplate with purple and brown MXR style knobs ( reference to the OG pedals) with a metallic pink body - and he found pink LED's to match! It's class all the way.

And I think I may have completed my synth board.

I actually LOL'ed at that one. I don't think I'll ever be complete with a pedalboard - too much fun!

Anyways, pics for your viewing pleasure, and I'll get some sound samples up soon!

Very cool! I’m definitely interested in the Funky Puppy, though I like the black face. What is the mod you requested?
There's a mod to make the Drive and Smooth controls respond smoother, as the originals are a bit uneven. It's not a huge difference, but I like the smooth controls. I played thru it a bunch today, it's really well done.
