Envelope filter/follower addict support group

Hit him up and let him know, he might have extra parts or a return, or at least you'll get on the list. He's a helluva nice guy!
Thanks for the suggestion! I contacted him and in fact he has a few in stock, just updated the website. I asked for a custom body color so that will take some time, but hopefully by then the postal situation will be resolved. And I can confirm, very nice guy.

made it fit.

Cool board! How you feeling about the DM-2W? It's been a little dark for me so trying to find a way to make it work.
I'm not playing in a band anymore so I can't really say. I love it for endless noodling and improvisation. It sounds so close to my mf104M, but lacks a bit of the richness of the moog.

If you can find one, the HBE Mimic II Delay is also fantastic but has limited delay time, i like it for slapback tones.

Apologies if this question has already been answered somewhere in the 21 pages of this thread:

What currently available envelope-controlled filter most closely approximates the sound, behavior, and predictability of the Ibanez/Maxon AF-9?

I've had an Ibanez AF-9 since around 1985, and I love it dearly, but it's starting to show its age and become unreliable.
I'd always assumed I would simply buy a Maxon AF-9 when my Ibanez finally pooped the bed...but I've noticed that AF-9s on the Maxon website have been listed as "SOLD OUT" for close to two years now, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

What's the next best thing?

Thanks.

Thanks! That's helpful! I'll have to test it out in various mixes.

Got my funky puppy today.

It's so damn good, IMO better than the combined 3Leafs (I love them on their own, but together, as a synth unit, they're not that convincing). The Link switch is a stroke of genius, would be a hassle with an extra patch cable like on the originals.
Well, does it synth like the MXR? No, the MXR sounds quasi like the real deal, but there's that lag, I don't want lag. The FP does exactly what I play, and when I play, superbe dynamics. Love it!!!!

Oh, and I got the brown and purple knobbies as an extra!

I'm going down this exact path, except I have a 3Leaf Octavbre Mini. Haven't had a chance to test them side by side, but hoping I can in the next few weeks.

hey there! The Maxon/Ibanez AF-9 are exactly the same inside - just different boxes on the outside. Both have been discontinued for quite some time, but they show up on the used market quite a bit (Reverb is gonna be your best bet).

The AF-9 falls firmly into the Mutron clone category - it's essentially the same circuit with a few tweaks, mostly to make it a little less temperamental, for lack of a better term. The response is a little more even, a little "easier" so to speak.

IMO the AF-9's are amongst the best Mutron clones. If you're looking for new, the Mutron Microtron IV is gonna definitely be your best bet. Otherwise, there are plenty of used AF-9's on the market (I happened to get lucky and find a "new old stock" unit). Otherwise, anything that says "Mutron clone" will get you there.

Hope this helps!

Very nice! So you got two sets of knobs? I'm in contact with the builder and currently waiting on a custom color for the body, which should be finished after the US tariff situation gets sorted.

Im going to sell one of them of course, and someone already has dibs on the Funkulator.

Nertz.... Just seeing this. Have always wanted to try one of those! ha ha Lost interest in Talkbass for a while and haven't been around for a hot minute, or I would've jumped into this thread earlier per our previous conversation @moon-bass!

I haven't made it back through this entire thread (yet), but based on the last several pages, I need to check out the Funky Puppy at the least (when shipping resumes to the States, anyway. I'll reach out to ut like @muggsy, I'm not in a rush. But to get on YOUR list, Moon... I'll take that pink Funky Puppy off your hands when you decide to move it down the road. LOL

I've also wanted to try out the Ftelettronica's Meatball clone for a long time, because I highly regret selling my Barge Concepts Grinder. I picked that one up early on in my effects pedal explorations, but sold it because I couldn't wrap my head around it at the time, But now I'm curious as to how the Ftelettronica and Artisinal Meathead compare.

As my signature might suggest, Envelope Filter is my favorite effect despite not using it in any current gigs. :roflmao: Full list of filters incoming...

Not including duplicates, I've owned or tried 40+ filters... Forty five if you include wahs. I feel like I'm maybe forgetting a couple, but my list is below. I freely admit I might have a problem. :)

It's been a fair while since I've owned or tried some of these, but I'm happy to share thoughts if anyone is interested. I can't really promise a timely response given my current lack of engagement on Talkbass, but I'll try and check back to this thread specifically more often. :)

A couple random thoughts:

- Doug John's "Chew On A Dog" (bass solo @ 2:22) track is 100% responsible for my fav filter of all time, the Pigtronix EP2/Bass Envelope Phaser. The EP2 is more flexible (particularly with the volume mod on mine), but holy hogs is it a pedalboard chonker. The smaller BEP is much easier to fit on a board. (Sidenote: I've got a patch on the source audio neuro that reasonably recreates this one)

- The 3Leaf filters are among my top favs because they're on the darker side, though... I don't know I'd actually call them tame. I can get down with a nice quacky Mutron sound, but I've always gravitated more toward the darker, more greasy side of filter sounds. Reference: One of my favorite tracks of all time is Christian McBride playing through the filter on his ME-50B for Philadelphia Experiment's "Ain't It The Truth." (bass solo @ 3:29)

- You're absolutely missing out if you haven't had the sublime experience of connecting an expression pedal to the Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe or ladder filter on the Source Audio Artifakt. The Chancellor wah is very good at this as well. Put them at the end of the chain, and you can manually filter sweep anything.

- If you like the Bassballs sound, do yourself a favor and see if you can track down an Ashdown Type 23. It's a tri-band filter vs. EHX's two bands, and has a switch on the bottom which (according to the manual) "further varies the frequency of the selected ‘high’, ‘low’ or blended filter oscillation frequency."

- The Source Audio C4 and Spectrum do have that same filter engine, but when importing Spectrum patches on the C4 or programming them side by side, there is indeed a slight difference in sound. It's not much at all, but I found I had to tweak settings slightly from one to the other to get the same result.

I forgot about the Behringer BM-11M Low Pass filter in the "Want to Try" category, too. I've never had the opportunity to try the original, so this one might be worth a look at a fraction of the price. Not sure if it's accurate or not, but saw a couple listings for it around the interwebs and looks like it might be releasing mid-October-ish.

You know ... the Ftelettronica Meatball clone was one of the clones that I tried awhile back and just didn't like. I love the Arisanal clone that I picked up recently, that's a keeper.

I don't know if it was my tastes/experience changing, or if one is better than the other, etc. I'd be interested in doing an A/B nowadays to see what the deal was,

How is that Funk Face? I'm kinda low key GASsing for one ...

Wanted to give a head's up - I'll be selling some nice filters soon, including the Past FX PX101. Emma Discumbobulator, Subdecay Prometheus v1, and a Digitech Bass Synth Wah BSW. I'll be posting these up for sale early next week, but HMU if anyone wants dibs.

Did you get a chance to build one of these yet? I'm strongly considering building one as well.

I'm still hunting for a Pigtronix Bass Envelope Phaser. I have a model of it in my Spectrum, but I really want to try the real thing :)
I spent ages tracking down a Pigtronix Bass Envelope Phaser and when I finally got one, I ended up preferring the model on the Spectrum/C4. I found the Spectrum/C4 sounded not only really similar but was also far more versatile.

I ended up selling the Pigtronix shortly after getting it. 😊
