Okay, still really enjoying my new EB-3, except for one thing that I've only just started to discover. The pickups, both, are microphonic.
I've never had experience with microphonic pickups, but I did some testing and there's a few give-always that I've confirmed are common with pickups that are/have gone microphonic. I plugged it into my recording software and hit record: tapping the covers and coils is picked up, touching the headstock is picked up (i.e. not a sympathetic thud through the strings, but I can hear my fingernails scratching around softly), and speaking into the pickups came through in the recording clearly. Playing with a pick, you can clearly hear the microphonic signal on top of the 'proper' signal.
I'm just wondering how common this is? And whether what I'm describing is enough to be considered a defect?
I could exchange the bass, but there's the risk that the next one will be the same I suppose - the store I bought it from is a webstore, and seems to ship direct from warehouse rather than from their physical shopfront. I could have it repaired, and it should be under some kind of warranty; I'll just have to pay a fair bit for shipping it interstate probably, as I bought it interstate. The shipping could be close to the cost of a DiMarzio Model One bought new from the US (I'm in Australia).
Do you know if the pickups are potted? If you have the right skills, that's a job you can do yourself and is likely to fix your issue.
