I dig the Reichtofen paint job!

Congrats on getting an EB-3. What guided you to acquire one?

I've liked the shape for quite a while, but never got around to get one. Would have loved to get one in Alpine White, but unfortunately missed the boat when they were available.

Never cared much for the cherry colored ones, although they look gorgeous, so I went for the Ebony, which is my 2nd favorite color of the EB-3's.

Also I've been collecting Epi Thunderbirds, and pretty much have the ones I want - So time for something else, and since I prefer Epiphone/Gibson style basses/guitars the EB-3 was an obvious choice...

I had a cherry EB3 back in the days when I had hair, really nice bass to play, I'd probably like get another sometime just for the nostalgia. Although I always think that my first Fender jazz was my favourite guitar I only had one Fender and three Gibsons in those days.

Is the quality of the EB comparable with the quality of the Classic Pro IV? If so it will be a great guitar to own and play

I like my Epi EB3 (ebony of course) a lot. It has that thick, solid Gibson sound and the neck dive issues are, in my opinion, overrated. The 4" Clayton leather strap (about $24 from MF) with the rough underside made a huge difference. I did put the Supertone bridge on it, mainly to minimize adjustment hassles. Having tried several different strings, I find the D'Addario Pro Steels (40-100) work best for me. The lighter gauges help prevent the bridge studs from pulling out, though that has not happened with the Supertone bridge. I don't know how they sell this for so little; I'd planned on upgrading the pickups, but the stocks are really, really nice.

I'm going to string my EB-3 with D'Addario ETB92M Nylons. I have the ETB92 Nylons on my Jazz, and La Bella 760NHBB Nylons on my Hofner. I do like Nylon strings.

I went with the EB-3 since Gibson decided the SG Std. wasn't worth making anymore, and I came to the realization also, that they wouldn't wise up and make the EB-3L again. The price of a Gibson EB-3L would probably be astronomical anyway. It's been a while since I had an Epi., and from what I've seen the Epi's are looking GOOD!

I bought a Gibson EB-0 in late 1969, early 1970. $349.00 Without a case. Some used cars back in 1969/1970 cost about that much. I do regret selling that one to a friend.

Welcome!

Thanks for the #203. A great number. This is my first time in the Epiphone Club.

Colin, can you describe the differences (if any) between the Epi and the Gibson? As you have both versions it would be interesting to hear about any playability/sound differences between the two, especially considering the difference in purchase price.
Sorry I missed your post

The differences are minimal, the obvious is the finish being poly vs the nitro on the Gibson, the other obvious one are the threaded inserts for the bridge having a lip on the Epi version and a slight difference in the body shape. The laminations are also slightly different, the Gibson having a 1/8" Walnut lamination whereas the Epi has a 1/16" veneer. The tuners are nicer on the Gibson too as is the finish on the bridge. So nothing ground breaking there.

The neck is nearly identical. both are a joy, the sound is great out of both but I have different strings on each so a direct comparison I can't give but with the round wounds that were on the Gibson when I bought it gave a very similar tone to the Epiphone. All in all the Epiphone is a class act make no mistake it could easily justify doubling the cost, there is no way the Epiphone could be described as inferior; the only real criticism I have is of the tuners but it's a small one that won't worry me at all. Seeing that you could buy three Classic IVs for the price of a Gibson you can afford to gig the life out of them without fear but also without compromise
