Has anyone on TB been to any of these Janes Addictions shows with the original lineup. Watching some clips on YouTube and Eric Avery is tremendous in my opinion, all business, commanding and patrolling his side of the stage.

Eric Avery returns to Jane's Addiction

The show they did at Pink Pop in the NL this year is up on YouTube. Avery sounds tremendous, with great stage presence. Perry, on the other hand, is REALLY showing his age.
I Agee. Don't get me wrong, I love Jane's Addiction and been a fan since Nothing's Shocking came out. They have their good shows and not so good ones, it's a given with just about any band playing live and at their age nowadays. I got through about 3 or 4 songs on that video and it wasn't Dave's, Eric's or Stephen's fault... still, not as bad as SOME bands from the 80's and 90's still "trying" to live up to stadium rock status lol.
Yeah, he's showing (and sounding) his age. I'm a huge JA fan, but man, he sounds bad.
Yeah, makes me sad. I first saw them in 1992-ish, and a couple of times in the late 90's and early 2000's. JA are one of those bands that, even if you don't love the music, you have to appreciate them for their talent and showmanship. With Perry limping around the stage like he's been doing recently, they just don't feel the same.

I've suspected that something is up with Perry for awhile. I've listened to a couple podcasts recently with him as the guest, and he was slurring his words and sounded generally incomprehensible. Don't know if it's drugs, alcohol, or something else.Oops…

Well I hate to say it, but…not really having paid attention before, it was a bit of a reality check when I read in another report that he is 65. I’m a bit older, and have taken to the ritual of occasionally checking the obits from my hometown, and it blows my mind how many people, roughly the same age and younger, perish from dementia related conditions(anger/agression being a possible symptom). I dealt with that with my mother in her waning years, but it’s not just an old folk’s home problem anymore.I've suspected that something is up with Perry for awhile. I’m not saying his situation is that, but there’s always potential. AC/DC’s Malcolm Young died at 64 from such complications. On the other hand, in spite of all the jokes, there’s Keef, who is still quite lucid in interviews as far as I’ve seen.

Jane's was of a time and place. For as influential as they were/are, they released very little in their prime. Replacing Perry won't satisfy anyone and, more importantly, won't sell, IMO. People were willing to deal with Perry's shot voice if the original lineup got together. It seems the band itself, and Perry specifically, couldn't deal with it.
They tried that already back in the early 2000s. I actually dig this record - some killer playing from Chris Chaney on it.Killer players in Janes, they should just pull a Rage Against the Machine and get a killer singer without "issues".
It's sad. Say what you want about Perry, but IMO there is no Jane's without him. I have to give him props - he created an extremely distinct sound both with Jane's and Porno for Pyros (and accomplished huge things with Lollapalooza), and I don't think I would have been into either of those bands nearly as much without his distinct and odd presence. I also think there is a deep connection between all four band members - you could see it in Dave's reaction (like: "why do you have to ruin a good thing?") and even Eric's (which was more like rage that Perry would do this when Eric had FINALLY come back). I can only speculate what's going on with Perry, but I would guess it's not actually anything like dementia, but is truly related to how he is hearing and perceiving the performance. I am sure the tinnitus is real, and he is having trouble keeping track of where he is in songs and actually getting the notes out. Contrary to his wife's nonsense, this really should not be about in-ears, unless they are doing it completely wrong, which is hard to believe for 4 old pros. Note that ear issues (whether tinnitus or wax build up) can exacerbate or cause dementia-like symptoms. Couple that with an unstable personality and some substance(s), and Perry lashed out at the nearest person who was doing just fine. If you watch the longer video of this incident, you can see that prior to it happening, Perry was singing where there should have been a guitar solo. Dave walked over and tapped his shoulder, pointed to himself, and started the solo. In the moment, a confused and disoriented Perry thought that Dave was being a dick, shutting him down and taking over. I sincerely think Dave was trying to help, which jives with his confused look when Perry attacked him. Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter. I think there is love between these guys, and I personally would like to see Perry get his s$it straight, because from what I have heard the band was on fire, and there were shows where Perry was singing well. I think they'd been on tour too long and everything imploded.
