Esperanza Spalding wins.

I really hope at least one kid, hopefully a girl might take the time to see, who is this Esperanza Spalding and why did she win, how did she get here, why don't I know about her and most importantly, how do I LEARN TO PLAY MUSIC.... We can only hope!

Amen. We have a few very young kids who occasionally play at our by-invite winery jams. One is already channeling Django at age 9, on two instruments no less. I always try to mention just one name each time I talk to them. Should be much easier to point them to Ms Spalding now... ;)

I don't have anything against Justin B. (he's just one more in a long line of churn-em-out pop idols for teens and preteens and it doesn't hurt me if he gets rich doing it).

But what a great day for real music. Nobody deserved to win that Grammy as much as Ms. Spalding. Not only has she worked hard and paid her dues to get where she is today but she is a class act in the extreme.

Congratulations Esperanza! :hyper::bassist::hyper:

I don't really get the hate for Justin Bieber (a teen who makes music for teens), but I'm extremely happy for and proud of Esperanza!

I can't say I hate him, but I'd certainly never call him an artist. He's a marketing strategy, nothing more.

However, I WILL get a kick out of what will happen as soon as the next big "marketing strategy" hits the charts. These same sore loser little girls who are defending him right now will be laughing any other little girls who still like "that loser Justin Bieber, he's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO last week". Within a week of that happening none of his current fans will even admit to remembering who he was. Such is the dual-edged sword of the teen star treadmill.

On the other hand, Esperanza Spalding will only keep getting better. Congratulations!

I don't hate Justin Bieber. I actually think he has talent. Heck, he's already a better drummer than some guys I have played with who are over twice his age! IMO it is more of a dislike for the prepackaged, glossy pop music machine who churns out hundreds of Beibers and uses them up quickly!

As much as I wanted her to win I didn't expect her to, she's not a huge pop mainstream name and in the main Grammy category, that's typically what it's all about. I was FLOORED to see her win!! Absolutely amazing. First time a Jazz artist has ever won this category.

The amount of coverage she's getting is great too, she's gained thousands of new fans now. On the today show they said "I guess people wanted someone more technical this year" and "I suppose Esperanza is better technically than Justin Bieber". Orly.

hey, she's 18 now. all bets are off.

anyway, the only thing that sucked about esperanza winning is that she wasn't competing against lady antebellum. maybe they're really nice folks but they come across so uptight like they take themselves so very seriously. they seem so humorless and dry compared to the country acts i dig, most of whom are now either dead or in their 70's ;)

but it did feel good to know that the bieber got entirely shut out. that kid's a little uppity. so to bring him down to earth even more than his crushing defeats tonight, let me remind you of my favorite moment with the bieber:

lol, +1 :smug:

It's interesting, some question why someone like her (or Diana Krall) would win anything...

Beyond the fact that they are both above average gifted instrumentalists, these are both singers who sing GREAT Jazz! I love jazz, but in recent years it's always someone scatting or otherwise singing with an ugly tone. Vocal jazz is not my favorite genre of jazz at all. The days of Frank Sinatra are gone, until the likes of Diane Krall and Esperanza came along to bring back the COOL!!!!!

As for the Beiber....he has what all the current pop tarts have in common....an inability to sing without auto tune in the studio, and utter uncoolness, and facelessness. Even Korea and Japan have better sounding pop stars! (Check out SNSD if you want to get heated up pretty quick!)

Congrats Esperanza!

So I was reading through some forums and enjoying the arguments that this win has stirred when I came across a post where the poster was lamenting that a bassist won because it's such an easy instrument to play. I should have expected a comment like that, but I didn't, it caught me by surprise, and I laughed so hard my drink spewed a little. It would be akin to saying Tito Puente sucked because he only had 2 drums to deal with. Some people...

Um...you didn't see the rest of that 3+ hour broadcast I'm guessing?

Clearly insubstantive canned ******** pop music still rules the roost.

Sure. And everyone is required to put on a 3 ring circus to support a so-so dance tune. Oh, and Madonna should either be flattered or PO'd that Lady Ga Ga totally stole her act.:D

I'm very happy Esperanza won over JB, but you gotta remember the track record of most "Best New Artist" winners. Hmmm, maybe JB should have won. Other than that, there might have been a couple three good moments...

The fact that she was competing against Bieber means that she now has the whole Bieber fan base knowing who she is. Although they all are displaying their anger and immaturity on the web in some way or another, all publicity is good publicity right? And there are even a few cases where Bieber fans have gone to look her up and have actually enjoyed her music and discovered a new artist.

Who knows how these things actually happen, but I think with Esperanza, her talent is just so unique that people who are involved in music (the people who actually vote for Grammy awards) might be struck by her originality a bit more than the latest in a long line of teen pop stars. Nothing wrong with that, there's always been a cute guy with a haircut, it's one of the most enduring pop archetype. When was the last time you saw such a striking female upright bassist/awesome singer? She's in a field of her own to a certain extent.

It's amazing how when the music industry machine falls apart completely and the record execs are left out on unemployment...THEN and only then does talent actually get recognized. Good riddance to the bloated music industry. Time to let the grown ups take the spotlight.

Thank you for saying that, again.

This is not about Justin, but about how good it is for ES. I have some friends who wanted Drake to get the recognition, but it's just so good to see Esperanza up there answering all those "who is she?" questions with real music. My wife, and that friend, didn't know before, and now know.
