Esperanza Spalding wins.

Can't say I'm surprised considering his target audience and Wikipedia's openness. I'm sure Esperanza knows this and doesn't care - heck, I'd be glad those brats aren't my fans.
I really hope at least one kid, hopefully a girl might take the time to see, who is this Esperanza Spalding and why did she win, how did she get here, why don't I know about her and most importantly, how do I LEARN TO PLAY MUSIC.... We can only hope!

BTW, did anyone catch Seth Rogen's comment re: Miley Cyrus? There's gonna be trouble over this.
hey, she's 18 now. all bets are off.

anyway, the only thing that sucked about esperanza winning is that she wasn't competing against lady antebellum. maybe they're really nice folks but they come across so uptight like they take themselves so very seriously. they seem so humorless and dry compared to the country acts i dig, most of whom are now either dead or in their 70's ;)

but it did feel good to know that the bieber got entirely shut out. that kid's a little uppity. so to bring him down to earth even more than his crushing defeats tonight, let me remind you of my favorite moment with the bieber:

Wow...she beats out Bieber and Drake...nice.

The Grammys is such a ... joke to be kind.. I am pleased that she won.. and only surprised not because of her talent but usually the artist with more substance to them looses out to the artist with the most hype...

I stopped watching the Grammys when Whitney Houston won two years in a row for the same album... I forgot who she was up against.. but it just wasn't that good.. and the nail was driven in the coffin of the Grammys for me when India Arie missed out the second or third time she was nominated.. the fact that it took her till 2010 to get a Grammy considering her talent.

I am glad that Esperanza won..

i'm kinda sorry to hear this; "best new artist" is usually the kiss of death to a career (milli vanilli, anyone?), with most recipients ending up in the "where are they now?" bin.

beiber should have won, just to accelerate his eventual disappearance.

E.S. will never be in the where are they now bin.. unless she decides to become a nun or something.. The Music is in her bones...

Awesome! The icing on the cake was how incredibly classy her acceptance speech was after so many "formula" acceptance speeches you get used to hearing. She's truly humble in her gift-a Musician and not a Pop Star.
It was great to see her playing with those talented Grammy Camp Kids as well.
A Great Day for Jazz, Bassists, and this incredibly talented and beautiful young lady!

Finally, all is right with the world. Well, at least just the best new artist category anyway. Congratulations to a real musician and vocalist for winning.

53rd Grammy Awards - Thank You Cam: Esperanza Spalding
