Esperanza Spalding wins.

Bieber is probably about at his zenith now, and due for a drop in popularity soon. (He's starting to date, right? Teeny boppers start to turn against their idols when they dare to date OTHER GIRLS other than the teeny boppers in question...) Look at the Jonas Brothers; three years ago they were burning hot; now they're almost entirely burned out. Justin needs to put some time into building himself a solid musical foundation apart from his current pop idolship if he wants to last much longer. Esperanza on the other hand built her foundation long before she started to get any fame, and it shows. "Slow and steady wins the race" in the long run, in the entertainment industry as well as other aspects of real life. I just hope that Justin's parent(s) and managers are making sure the money he's pulling in now is well invested, or he'll end up like lots of other kid / teen stars, who find themselves almost penniless when they get up into their 30s and 40s...

Esperanza is great, and I'm glad she won. But a lot of you guys are acting no better than the Bieber fans. Talking about him getting hit by a bus etc.? Grow up. Yes, he IS talented. So are the Jonas brothers. And so what if he wasn't

And don't fool yourselves into thinking that Esperanza won primarily because of her bass-playing talent. Or even her singing. Yes, it helps that she is very talented. But that's not the primary reason.

I think it's wonderful that she won. But if she looked like Anthony Jackson, it wouldn't have happened. If she wasn't a singer, it probably wouldn't have happened.

Anyway, congratulations to Esperanza. But don't expect this to signal a change in the musical direction of the Grammys.

Here's a GREAT short article from Oregon Live:

2¢: everyone realizes music is not sports. Music is not about competition, but creating.
Everyone realizes how the music industry and glitz factories work.
But at the core music is love/money. just sayin'. peace

Big congrats to Esperanza! She's one of many great artists I've learned about since joining Talkbass (I'm a keyboardist). I'd also like to say that the Grammy show overall was pretty entertaining this year. I didn't see the next James Brown, Beatles, Prince, Who, etc., but I lot of those acts were really good.

...

Talented? I don't know about that. The only time I can say I saw him perform was once on the Today show and he sounded HORRIBLE. Timing and pitch was just off. That could have been a monitoring problem, but based on what I saw my money is elsewhere.

This is the immaturity I was referring to. How old are you? I don't like what I've heard of Bieber's music, but I don't feel the need to insult either him or any other performers to make myself feel better. If name-calling is how you get your jollies, knock yourself out.

The immaturity of the Bieber horde by far outweighs the immaturity of Talkbass. Two wrongs make a right if one is more wrong yes? :hiding:

I agree with smeet. While his music grinds my gears and makes my pretty on edge, some of you have superiority complexes. Sure, he's very clearly in the game to be famous, but the difference is... at least he is. Sounds like sour grapes over his success with little skill, while some of you, who I'm sure are fantastic musicians, have gained little to none. Don't have to like his music, also don't have to be a child about it.
