Anywho... DavePlaysBass, I'd be interested in those graphs if it's not too much trouble. Did you find that 250k pots also decrease the voltage output of the circuit?

i have to agree with Jimmy. While my sx PJ sounded good, it was also able to cut through the mix.
on the other hand, my jazz...as much as i try to like it since i love the blueburst quilt top, it gets completely muddy and lost in the mix.

The Pink, Red, and Dark Blue are 500K. Note the big resonant peak (pink) with things wide open. Then note the increase treble roll off as you decrease volume (Red, Dark Blue).
On the other hand, some like the increased treble response wide open with a 500K that you get with the pink resonant peak. I don't have the actual sim in front of me (just the picture), but it looks to be around 4kHz which could be useful.
The 250K has less resonance wide open. And also has less treble roll off as the volume is tweaked down.
Again, this is simulated. I have not gone thru an extensive A/B can I really hear it.

You guys are GASing me for SX PJ. I was thinking about routing out my 50's P for a J, but for $120, I might as well get an SX especially if the pickups get the job done.
wow, this is a suprise for me. i am always seeing sx pups on ebay going for around $20. that and wilkinson pups. didn't trust them because of the price, but guess i will have to thing twice on the sx bass pups. still don't know on the wilkenson's.

Looks more like just under 2k given the log scale - and that's a decent boost of around 6dB.

Good eye. I hate log scales. Going back to the simulation it is 1.9kHz with a 7dB boost for 500k. And 2.6 dB at 1.8kHz for 250k. Both are -3dB down at around 3kHz.
At 75% volume out. The 250k pot -3dB point is 2.8kHz. The 500K pot -3dB point is 2.2kHz. Probably not a night and day difference.

as for the pole pieces, if you dab a bit of clear nail polish on them it seemes to fix the problem.. i think i even read that solution on here. anyway, i've used it on a few basses and it has worked both times. i also got my girlfriend to by the nail polish so i didn't look like a pansy

I don't know that I'd go with the 500K's with the single coil J pu's. Might be a little too bright sounding, but with the hum canceling, and hotter split coil P p/u's it works quite well (for me anyway)

I thought the SX P pickup on the one I just got sounded pretty good, but I really don't like how the pole pieces stick out like that. I have to lower them a lot which causes me to lose a bit of a thumb rest.
I just picked up a Quarter Pound and I'm gonna see which one I like more.
I bought around $20 Wilkinson pup a while back to replace a failed pup in my Yamaha...I was pleasantly surprised by its tone...round, full, and even...
I've since switched back to the original pickup (I had it fixed) and sold the Wilkinson...
the Wilkinson had a DCR of 8.8k, the Yamaha pickup has a DCR of 14k (highest DCR of any P-pickup I've seen)
construction on the wilkinson wasn't great (the magnet was stuck on a bit crooked on one half), but the pickup worked FINE...
BTW...the cheap yamaha pickup is also a great pickup...it's bigger and darker sounding than the wilkinson, which makes the series selection (I did a series mod) sound really full and fat.
Dave - Thanks for the graphs. I always wondered why there was a big change in sound quality (not just the volume) between 8 and 10 on the volume pots - its the big peak that is created. I have always played with them backed off a little - now I know why.
I'll tell you why, then...When you said the thing about the guy earning $6 a week at the SX factory, not only was it off topic, but it's almost saying that I don't care about human rights as long as I get what I want. The truth is I do care about human rights, but there's nothing anyone can do about China, so not buying SX basses will result in someone who might have the best job he ever had having to go work the rice fields again for a third of the money, or worse, not have a job at all.
And that's why I got offended.
