Yeah it's strange. I love that if I play my spirocores on my bass for 2 years, they'll sound dark like Evahs for 5 more years...but the feel of the Evah weich lets me justify buying them. I assume I'll buy them every 2 years or so.

bskts: yup...I tried the EP Weichs a while back. Liked the sound but not the tension. I play firmly and like the tension of Spirocore 4/4 weichs and Zyex Lights. My hands never get tired. But with the Spiro's I don't expect to have to buy anymore for the rest of my playing days. I'm now well into geezerhood.
Ah, now youre making me want to throw the weich strings back on...I may do that before putting the new evahs on. i've got a set lying around. On my bass at least, the Evah weich are in between the spiro mediums and spiro weich which I think is the sweet spot on my bass.
I've noticed too with multiple set ups and as I have my bass longer it has opened up. The evahs didn't sound very bright when I tried them 3 years ago but now they feel great on my bass. Lots of variables i guess.

bskts: My conclusion is to experiment a bit and then have the discipline to stick with what you like best. The longer you have your bass the easier it is to figure out which strings it likes. I have spent far too many years trying different strings and combinations. During that time I have used a 1952 Kay Swingmaster, a 1949 Kay C-1, a 1930's King Moretone and now my Eberle. In every case I ended up with Spiro 3/4 or 4/4 Weichs. They are the only pizz non-gut strings that worked well (tension, volume and tone) on all 3 basses. In the end though it's still a compromise. C'est la vie.
Evas were a little too dark on one of my Basses. I also thought they got lost in the mix when amped. Without the amp they sound great and bow well. Maybe the best crossover string. It just depends on the particular Bass and what it likes. Its hard to beat Spiros, but would like to try again, there is something magical there. Some players like John Pat. can really make it happen.

lrhbass: Not sure if you were responding to me or bskts. But as far as the EP/EP Weichs are concerned.......I go directly into the Board and don't use an amp on stage. However I found the EP/EP Weich G strings especially, get lost in the PA too. More so when I use piezo pickups (Bass Max and Schatten RB-1) playing pizz. Never had that problem with any other G string including Dominants and guts.
I had an issue with them with my realist pickup but they sound fine with my full circle in terms of balance across the strings. I can take a video for you when I get back. I always keep my amp (tc electronic head and a small gene benz) on passive and just according to the room
Question on how soon the Evah weichs are playable from a new set. I remember the E string is a little dull when they first come out of the package but will the tuning stability be ok after an hour or so of playing? I get back to my bass tonight and am thinking of throwing them on in the morning, but I have a gig around 4:00. Is that too short of a time?
Maybe you could comment on what a fresh set of Evah weichs bring to the table compared to your old set. My weichs are also almost 3 years old now, and although I've take them off a few times to try other strings, they have been on my bass the most.Damn
Overall, still the best sounding strings for my bass.

Wondering what the signs are that point to time for a new set. Loss of volume, flatter sound in general, less gravitas? That kind of stuff.
In my experience the jazz pizzicato sound eventually became dull. The percussive ping at the start of the note never diminished, but the growl, sustain, and brightness did. Under the bow they still sounded good.

So I failed you.
I was half way into putting my new set of Evahs on when I realized i forgot to do the A/B. I did however film the spirocores on before this. The difference I feel between the old Evahs and the new Evahs is the ability to hear the pitch quicker. The tone is more or less the same on my bass but the pitch is easier to pick out. Not much brighter to be honistly but that's not a bad thing.

The main thing I'm wondering about is frequency content -- whether old Evahs lose any bottom end and become more "flat" (midrangy) sounding. That's kind of what I'm getting from my 2.5 year old set of Weichs. The tone, front end note attack and sustain are still there, but they just seem to have lost some power.
theres not a major power difference on my bass. Not much louder. The sustain is slightly better and I notice that the slides that I do are much more pronounced.
I am thinking of having an extension put on my bass sometime soon - maybe this summer. The EP weichs are going back on and I'm curious of a long E to try them with. Some possible extended E candidates: EP Weich, Spiro Weich, Helicore Hybrid.
