About 2 years ago I was playing in a pretty heavy metalcore kind of band, you know, lots of mosh pits, high energy kind of stuff
This particular show was just a really small community center show, just for fun. Either way, during our set I noticed "that guy" must not have been any older than 20, completely sober, but just being a general jerk. Punching random people in the mosh pit, hitting people that we trying to avoid him, acitvely seek out new "victims". I'm keeping an eye on him during the set because despite the music everyone there was a relatively nice person. Our set finishes up and I hear this kid heckling us yelling things from the pit, not being man enough to show his face. Obviously a winner.
The next band goes on, same kind of music. "That guy" decides to start a pit again by swining fists. I'm watching from the side for a little while until I've had enough of seeing the GIRL getting punched in the back so I decide to play along. As I enter the pit and "dance" in front of the young gentleman I wait for him to lean down a bit and then "accidentally" throw a kick behind me, connecting to the chin/throat region, prompting him to hit the floor and stay there. Upon the completion of the song I helped him up and said "You need to stop hitting people." And the problem was solved.
Sometimes you just have to wait and pick your time to deal with "that guy" especially if there is a lack of security.
P.S.- I'm not a big guy 5'7, 160lbs. but its all in the placement
