Ever thrown a bass away?

i threw away the body to my epi EB0 when i found out it was plywood. kept the neck though.

I've always wanted to ask this on Talkbass.. Have you ever just thrown a bass away?

Obvious reasons include complete mangling and breakage, whether from stage, or shipping, abuse. Another possible reason might be complete and utter disgust with a cheap instrument.

America has become such a disposable society.. I'm wondering how many bass tossers we actually do have out there.

I have, My first bass was a plywood P the neck snapped, body cracked and electronics where fired, i kept the hardware and the body as a reminder to buy better stuff.

Luckilly never come across one which was so bad as to be considered trash. And I feel really lucky for that.

Yes a Peavey Foundation but that doesn't really count does it?

Peavey makes some pretty good basses. Foundations are good basses. And for the price you can get em for you can beat em to death and still have a bass that can hold up.

Many many years ago i was having an argument :scowl:with a girlfriend, my bass was lying against the couch, and i had this implusive urge to leap in the air and jump on the bass, snapped the neck in half.
I felt a bit stupid after that, cause i had spent weeks rebuilding it.
stripped the hardware off and threw the rest away.

No, I haven't thrown away a bass but since it's been brought up already I once gave a friend of mine my MIM Fender P for a birthday present.

Two days ago I gave away an applause accoustic bass that I had forgotten I even had to one of the guys moving my mom out of her house. The truss rod and neck were warped byond repair, and plus I haven't even touched it in 4 years so I got rid of a worthless bass for a little piece of mind about all my mothers belongings.

Not quite a bass, but my uncle did the same to an upright piano that my grandma left for me. Smashed it to bits when I was 14. I haven't spoken to him since. I'm 23.

Your uncle and my father are kindred spirits when it come to encouraging nascent musical talent.

Had an old Framus Strato-Bass that sat in my garage and rotted and I really had no other choice but to throw it out. Sucked anyway.

back the first time I started to play bass, back while in the USAF at FE Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY, picked up a used bass at a pawn shop for about $25 or so. Someone had probably been stationed in Japan or Korea and picked it up for cheap. P Bass copy of some sort. They'd sanded it down, painted it bright yellow with black tiger stripes on it. Didn't play great, but wasn't total trash, either; worth $25 anyway... When I was transfered to Germany, went into storage and never came out. Three years ago I decided I wanted to start playing it again. Dug it out of the attic where it had been stashed when we moved to NJ. Salt air, humidity, etc. had not been kind. Wood warped, just about everything metal inside and out rusted and/or corroded, etc. Far beyond repair, and nothing left on it in good enough shape to be salvaged. So into the trash it went. Needless to say, my curent basses are being treated a heck of a lot better - and while I'm still barely a mediocre player at the moment, I'm already playing a lot better than I did 30 years ago.

Back when I was still gigging band leaders liked 'mediocre' bass players. Why? Because they'd hold down the bottom instead of showing off.

I was well liked.

I actually threw my first bass away, as soon as I got my jazz bass. I bought my first bass cheap along with an equally bad amp. It didn't have a brand name and I just hated the sound of it. Before I threw it out, I tried de-fretting it, just out of curiousity; it still sounded terrible, though.

I dismantled it, because I thought I might use the parts for spares for my new bass, but later threw these out as well, since they were just of lousy quality.

Wow, that is an awesome bass. Is it yours? Do you still have it? Will you sell it to me? I wouldn't hesitate to dumpster dive for that spectacular instrument. I can't imagine anything that I wouldn't do for that. Geez, if you did get rid of it, some lucky SOB is undoubtably loving every minute with that beauty. I can tell just by looking that the tone on that thing is phenomenal. I'm sorry, I need to be alone for a minute.............

My bass teacher's friends band got all their equiptment when a guy who was going through a divorce threw all of it out. including an original 50's p bass. I threw away a $50 strat copy after smashing it to bits (didn't take much effort). Never thrown away a bass. Never found one either. SOme people are just lucky. I'm waiting for the day when I "get mine". (not waiting very hard, as I love the gear I have)

Im proabaly gonna throw away my old Dean. The thing fell apart in my hands didnt play very but what can you expect from a $100 dean?
