BTW, Uninformed, have you ever been to a hospital and seen how many products there wouldn't be possible without plastics, i.e. oil?

The solution to the petroleum issue is not a magical silver bullet that will completely replace it. Petroleum use is entrenched world wide...it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Part of the solution would include a REDUCTION in petroleum consumption through CONSERVATION and the utilization of a DIVERSIFIED set of alternative resources (e.g. wind, natural gas, solar, hydro, nuclear, geothermal, ethanol, etc...but definitely not coal!...them folks have some good lobbyists :p).

When a gallon of gas was topping $4.50/gallon last year, people started conserving. Bus ridership was up, I saw more people bicycling to work, people were carpooling and putting off long road trips...all of this was in Southern California, ancestral home of Car Culture. Ford stopped making the Excursion long ago, Hummer may be going the way of the dodo.

The writing is on the wall. The economy is hurting, people are hurting. Conservation is not just for tree huggers anymore.

I don't want to derail this into a political downward spiral, but most people can agree that gov't serves a purpose to protect its citizenry, that includes protecting them from the exploitation of corporations. Y'know, crazy ideas like child labor laws, or workman's compensation, antitrust laws, OSHA, or the FDA, for instance. You probably like that your children don't work in a factory and that you can tend to rely on your food not poisoning you. I could be wrong though.:hmm:

Without fossil fuels, the industrial revolution would not have been on near as large of scale. It may not have happened at all.

Without the industrial revolution, we are living in a large city and riding a carriage or horse everywhere, and have no communications other than print media.

If we do not live in a large city, we are in a rural area, where we have little communication with the outside world, other than an occasional letter from a loved one, or a newspaper. Railroads would not exist, so it would take days to travel anywhere more than 50 or 100 miles away.

Shipping is still only by wind power.

Forget about telephones, electrical musical instruments, computers, internet, and a global economy. Forget about a global village.

And that is still just scratching the surface!

Back on topic - the company I hate because they are evil and downright demonic...whichever company it is that makes those darn marshmallow Easter peeps.

every year around this time it happens, they appear out of nowhere...all tasty and just right to be eaten..yet at the same time soooo cute and innocent looking. Staring up at up at you with these little wistful eyes...."please sir, don't eat me.." you look in it's eyes and see the sadness and despair..."I'm just a peep sir. Of no harm to anyone, my sole purpose is to look cute. It's for the children sir.."

That's why I bite their heads off first before the rest of the body. Grrowl ***rRRRRip* om nom nom.

Something overlooked in this discussion is that alternative fuels, while usually cleaner to use are, as of right now, much "dirtier" to produce than fossil fuels.

If they don't get you coming, they get you going.




And if some want to argue that fossil fuels and a byproduct (plastics) are destroying the world, you could really take it back a few steps and flat out say that people are destroying the world. We've been doing it since well before the first Model T, well before the industrial revolution, and well before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Heck, even our penchant for raising cattle adds to CO2 emissions.....

Those cows fart a lot.
