Evil companies that aren't WalMart

Vector Marketing, aka Quixtar, aka AMWAY.

I was too smart for those swine. Waaaay too smart. No one 8-ball pyramid schemes Thunderscreech.

Speaking of pyramid schemes. My girl just went to a job interview that she realised was a crock from the moment she walked in (felt 'set up'). After making it through the first interview (as with all the other 8 people), and having a briefing etc, they asked for any questions to be written down and handed in then they'll bring them in one by one.
She just drew a big pyramid :p

Tex and Edna Boyle's Organ Warehouse and Emporium.

They say they have the lowest prices in town but I believe it's just a ruse to get you to come in where they proceed to brainwash you into joining their cult. I hear they force you to eat babies and raise cats ..... or maybe it was the other way round?

Regardless, I don't recommend it.

Monsanto. After decades of poisoning the planet's soil, water and foodchain with e.g. DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange, rBGH and Roundup they are now (with other agritech giants) lobbying to effectively outlaw local organic crops and kill off small farms nationwide under the pretext of food safety (HR 875, S 425). Their GMO terminator seeds, which will not grow without the patented chemicals they also sell and which produce sterile crops, are designed to put food growers in virtual bondage. Add their mobster-like tactics of bullying and intimidation to enforce this scheme, and you're looking at evil in corporate form.

What is your point in this debate? That oil companies treat their workers cruelly or the fact that they provide the world with oil? Given the opening post I suppose discussing the latter is rather off track, but hey.

I live in a contry whose wealth is more or less solely based on oil. Now believe it or not, but the world would not function without it as of now. Providing customers with a product is by no means evil. I really don't understand where you are heading with your arguments in previous posts - because you cannot change the past course of development. Your posts seems like whining about things that has happened - not very constructive.

And you've also said oil companies push a product that can be replaced by renewable energy. Wrong. Why? Because it's not been developed at all. Renewable energy is surely the energy of the future, but now we are in a phase, much like the industrial revolution and its steam engines, where oil is a main resource of energy. This will change, but in the meantime we'll continue to use oil as a cheap and very convenient energy resource. From oil to renewable energy is not a change that will happen overnight, but a transition that will take many decades.

Just because a company provides a product everyone uses doesn't mean they can't be 'evil'.

I'm more against oil companies in the way they directly and indirectly effect the environment. The amount of water wastage in producing oil and the direct effect from the plants on our earth is just sad, IMO.

I also don't believe all is being done to produce and finance more sustainable energy, that what is being produced is being marketed/sold to better human development fully, and that consumers are doing enough to make the change.

Just my $0.02

First, and sorry but it's one of those pet peeves of mine, the word you're looking for is "Affect", a verb not a noun.

Have you never seen the runoff from a paper mill? How about the area around a steel mill? Just about any industrial facility that produces some form of product is going to have waste byproducts that typically wind up dumped into the environment.

One of the biggest cleanups I have personally witnessed was that of a leather/cowhide plant up in the Boston area. It was so bad that acres and acres of topsoil had to be removed and replaced, along with the parking lot and drainage ditches of the place I was working at the time. They removed 6 feet of dirt as far as you could see and tore down one building that sat on top of contaminated soil.

Haha, I know, it's 3am though so cut me some slack, I thought it was wrong.

I have seen the run off from those, but that's not what we are talking about and another area all together. As far as i'm concerned/know, there's more alternatives to oil then what there is for steel.

As for cowhide/leather. Don't agree with it anyway, and I know the impacts of agriculture and food industries.. I have many a vegan friends, haha.

Ah, but you made it what we were talking about when you said "I'm more against oil companies in the way they directly and indirectly effect the environment. The amount of water wastage in producing oil and the direct effect from the plants on our earth is just sad, IMO."

As long as people are eating the meat of cattle, what's wrong with making things out of leather? What else would we do with it....? Dump it back into the environment to rot? THAT would be a waste of resources in my opinion.

I didn't make it what we were talking about, someone asked what the beef was with oil companies, I just thought i'd chip in on that issue. We could go on all day about other industries, and probably get the thread closed.

I don't really see anything 'wrong' with leather producing especially if they are being used for meat anyway, I just don't agree with wearing it, just a personal thing for me. The way some cattle are treated in order to mainly get the hides in some places is pretty wrong though.

If you want to stretch the point, almost any "production-raised" animal is treated in a less than perfect manner....Veal beef, chickens, turkeys, pigs, etc.

If you get right down to it, EVERYTHING the human race touches manages to screw up the environment and those other creatures that live in it.

Perhaps we should all drink the kool-aid and put the world out of its misery....

Then we wouldn't have to worry about the evil companies any more!

:)

Pretty much sums it up!

As for the leather, if you haven't already, look into the india trade, that's not cool IMO. Mind you, neither is a lot of farmed animal treatment, so what can you do? Go vegan? pft.

CLASSIC!!!!!

(Back on topic)

I don't really think that incorporated companies are "Evil" by nature... psychopathic, yes. I sort of agree with a lot of what this book says:

Ultimately, these are extremely powerful entities who are simply looking out for the best interests of their shareholders, regardless of the damage it does to anyone and anything that would become an obstacle to a maximum return on a minimal investment.

The cocaine trade is a scary and sad story as well...

Another HUGE +1 for the Pharmaceutical companies.
Evil beyond the abilities of most people to even comprehend. Psychiatric drugs are particularly appalling.

Lots of good books...but people here don't read anyway, so they can just watch a DVD of The Kids in the Hall's Brain Candy and get the general idea and a yukfest in the bargain.
