Actually, that was former bassist, Mike Starr. NOT Inez, who was busy at the time, playing with AIC.

Who also had phenominal tone and chops(Starr, its him in the older vids with the white Spector).

Niiiice, not heard that before. That's gotta be the Streamer Stage 2 midrange 'purr'. As an aside, what frequency would you guys recommend to get that? I've never got that tone from my warwick, but I am planning on putting some new pickups and a custom ACG filter pre-amp in it, which should help with bringing out the warwick growl......

What bass is that? Looks like a Rick body with EMG J pickups (3 of em!), and a new neck off a bass I don't recognise.....yet it still sounded like a Rick!

Here's a few examples of tones I LIKE. They are not what I sound like directly, as I have a range of different basses and EQ settings I use to obtain different sounds. My main tone actually sounds like a piano....being hit with a hammer (as in very midrangey and ballsy, with a pinch of gritty growl).

Anyway, here's some lovely bass tones:



I can't find any examples of fingertones I like, but basically any jazz style bass with a single coil in the bridge position, with the mids boosted, and play away. That'll normally sound decent to me!

I've only got a Jazz at the moment though, and I can't afford any other bass/amp, so all I can do is cut the treble and push up the mids to get close to the tone.

While Maurice Gibb (Beegees), Ray Shulman (Gentle Giant) have always been some of my favourites, there are two particular songs that come to mind:

(Sweat in Bullet, Simple Minds)
- This is one of the rawest, best fretless tones ever. The slides sound like bends. Derek Forbes, baby. You MUST wait for the chorus.

Also, Geezer's tone on "Fairies Wear Boots". Just delicious tron.

I love that tone too. Burpy, midrangy, smoothy sound. From what I've read, seen and could figure out, some of that tone comes from muting with the left hand though...technique factors in, I'm assuming. I'm new to bass so this is all new to me.
