Examples of "that" tone you strive for.

How can I get this tone? I've got a P/J too. :D The tone is not all fuzzed-out but it's got growl and burp...it's "round". Me likey! Can someone point me in the right direction? I've got a Shuttle 6.0, if that helps any.

Make sure you use bright roundwounds with a super hard attack right over the pickup. Seems like the treble knob is up, and the J pickup is blended into a full P pickup.

Oh, and wow Mark, I didnt see that Methany clip! That tone is insane! Sounds like its probably an MTD, as it has that "piano" tone, but thats just IMO.

EDIT AGAIN: WOW! Thats a Jazz bass! Holy cow! I never would have guessed that! Palm muted 70s Jazz.. Wow, what a surprise.

I know eh?!
blew my mind! The guy's got THE tone. SO SICK.

Okay, seeing Im snowed in at home here with 20'' of snow, Im bored.. So, Im going to compile a list of my favorite P bass tones, along with videos, and any info I know about the tone and or bassist! :D

The New Mastersounds

Lettuce

MMW

JMT / Pino Palladino

Those are just off the top of my head, y'all are welcome to add to the list! I thought I would list some things that might push some of you guys into looking for that tone you dream of. Im close to mine, Im just missing the Ampeg rig.. I will have one soon enough, thats for sure.

Seems to me that P+Flats+Ampeg/All Tube setup=what Im going for.

This was more of a spur of the moment post, but I thought Id throw it out there!

Dude! I never heard of the New Mastersounds, but they're un-frikkin'-believable! Thick and greasy and stanky and obese funk, man I'm glad I clicked on this thread. Thanks!

Youre welcome! I just heard of em the other day, and I dont know how I went so long without em! Im just dumbfounded at their skill and talent.

And Pete plays that P like a bat outta hell!

Yeah, since I found out about them a few hours ago, I haven't stopped trying to cop his lines from the 102 % album. I like how he's not buried in the mix, but really stands out, without taking away fro the other instruments. Plus, he plays smoother than my girlfriend's bum.

Seriously, you just made my week :)

"That tone" I strive for is a mix of:

Camel
Caravan
Hypnos 69 (for pick sound)

I think all them are flat sounds (as in "used flatwounds"). I know of Hypnos 69 that the bassist used a Fender Precision with flats for "The Eclectic Measure", but he has used Stingrays with flats (!) on earlier records.

Dunno about Camel and Caravan, though. I think I saw a Ric somewhere on a photo, but I get close enough with a Fender P to not care about that...

What bass is that? Looks like a Rick body with EMG J pickups (3 of em!), and a new neck off a bass I don't recognise.....yet it still sounded like a Rick!

He had that bass made for him. He originally had a Ric that he put jazz pickups in, but Ed Roman made him this bass. He can switch between a Ric sound and a Jazz sound on the fly. He does it in the same song too. You can hear it on the original recordings really well.

You know what I've noticed about videos of Mick Karn's bass playing? In none of them can you actually see the guy playing the damb bass! Anyway, this fretless tone makes me weep. I'm close to getting it on my SR5... but of course I have nothing like this guy's chops:
